I have been working at Corbis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have been here for over 5+ years and I have only moved up. Consistently offered opportunities for growth, to make more money and work on interesting projects. Corbis provides an atmosphere and culture to be creative and problem solve to meet the challenges of the marketplace and are rewarded for your efforts.

    Cons

At times the change of management and the dynamic of the internal org can feel challenging, in addition to the challenges of the competition in the industry.

    Advice to Management

Build the brand to be a solid place, and invest in marketing for the brand.

I worked at Corbis full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Salaries and benefits are great and, from mid management down, some of the best, most dedicated employees and colleagues you will ever find. Great work / life balance! Morale is dismal, though, and declining, as everyone feels the company is on the verge of failing.

    Cons

The CEO has limited business acumen and hasn't shown an iota of interest in stock photography since he took over this STOCK PHOTOGRAPHY agency. Anyone with integrity on the E-team who challenged him has been pushed out of the company... it all does't make for a rosy future for Corbis.

    Advice to Management

What are you going to do Bill? You have a phenomenal images collection at Corbis, and many great employees who, over the years, poured their hearts into the company. It pains these individuals to see the company fail. Start over... but this time with a leader who understands the business.

    Pros

The office is very relax, you can listen to music, pretty much wear whatever you want as long as your work is done and its efficient and hitting target they are pretty laid back.

    Cons

They fire people left and right and give bad excuses as to why.
They don't do much to make the employee feel appreciated
There isnt really room for growth

    Advice to Management

    Make you employees feel appreciated

    Pros

Decent benefits. Good employees. Nice offices.

    Cons

Unfocused direction. Underutilize employee's skills. Not an agile company, and can't figure out how to monetize its vast collection.

    I worked at Corbis full-time

    Pros

There are some great people who all work very hard at the lower end of the company. Corbis offers decent benefits package for healthcare and vacation. Some great community/charitable outreach ideas but even these suffer due to ineffective and practical consideration and application.

    Cons

The company suffers from a middle and upper management infrastructure that is bloated, outdated and archaic on all levels with no clear and concise focus on today, let alone the future. Incredibly limited vision on how to effectively drive revenue/growth in a challenging marketplace. Zero loyalty to lower level staff regardless of long term performance.

    Advice to Management

EVOLVE. Employ some practical, realistic and forward thinking ideas. Listen and involve staff in direction and policy decisions instead of simply inflicting tired, unrealistic changes and quotas that, in the short term, only serves yourselves and your own self worth rather that benefiting the company as a whole.

I have been working at Corbis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Interesting work with great people

    Cons

Corbis can't come up with a single original idea but instead spends the little money it does make, or it can get from uncle Bill, on buying out other companies and then destroys the creativity and unique ideas the acquired companies have with bureaucracy. No potential for upward movement and little to no communication from management about the plan moving forward.

    Advice to Management

Find a better company and save yourself the headache.

No Sales Leadership at the Executive or Sr. Management Level. Toxic environment. Everyone looking over their shoulders.

I worked at Corbis full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The company's creative mission was inspiring. I loved working for a company that honored photographers and photographs and helped make it possible for the craft to be successful as a business.

    Cons

Corbis is, essentially, a pet project and tax write-off for Bill Gates. Executive leadership was not held accountable enough for executing to strategy, fostering good business and leadership practices and company values, and supporting company employees.

    Advice to Management

Take the company seriously. The industry is one that requires re-invention and there have been change agents inside the company who were not heard. You can keep the artistic spirit and mission and still pay attention to good business practices and make the company successful.

    Disapproves of CEO

    Pros

Worked with some great people that worked hard despite very discouraging circumstances year after year.

    Cons

Emotion-driven decision making by management, the CEO allows only yes-men to remain on the executive team. The message about the "new path forward" differed every single year so there was eventually no credibility with employees - this was so pervasive that eventually the CEO stopped communicating with the employees altogether.

    Advice to Management

Leave the ivory tower that is your office and walk the floor - let your employees see you rather than expecting them to just have faith that things will be better year after year.

    Cons

    Systemic short-term strategic planning:
      Little opportunity for career growth

Lack of ability to attract and retain qualified talent
