    Pros

Above average vacation time (hey it's a Canadian company!)
They try to treat employees with respect (at least in North America)

    Cons

It's a mix of many companies they acquired, plagued by poor management. If you're an innovative person looking for an exciting work, this place is not for you.

    Advice to Management

Think out of the box, get some innovative leaders, commodity business won't survive! You've lost so many chances already, could have been #1 on mobile multimedia apps.

    I worked at Corel full-time

    Pros

    - OK pay and benefits
    - Life/work balance
    - Some very bright and nice people to work with

    Cons

    - Constant layoffs
    - No vision/direction
    - Very short-sighted outsourcing stragtey from new management who has no idea about the the products are

    Advice to Management

It is easy to look at numbers and make calls on what you can see. It is harder to be couragous and taking-risk to head the company to the future growth. Without a mindset change, the company is going away sooner or later.

I worked at Corel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The employees at Corel are great. It's a very tight place. The developers are very smart. Core products are good and generally well maintained. Miracles performed daily. Equipment is good. Health benefits are good. There may be good opportunities here for someone especially starting out, or someone out of work.

The executive team works out of CA so you only have to listen to them pretend to give a damn about you one or twice a year.

The Ottawa management team I think is doing the best they can with what they have. They're good people honestly.

    Cons

Corel was bought out by a VC firm and it's never been the same. Bankruptcy was prevented but the company was gutted in every way possible. Layoffs have been very deep which caused unrecoverable damage to morale which is lukewarm at absolute best unless things have changed very recently which I doubt.

Their most talented developers have already left. Good news is that many now work at Google, Microsoft and other successful places. They got there from what they learned at Corel which is something.

The pay is OK but probably the min they can get away with. Starting vacation is behind the times. Negotiate as absolute high as you can because getting a raise or promotion is nearly impossible.

The office furniture is older than you are.

    Advice to Management

Move the Ottawa team to a new building or at least out of the basement. Get some decent chairs. Put some snacks in the fridge. Close the office over Christmas like most other places. Realize that it's a miracle you still have the engineers left that you do.

I have been working at Corel as a contractor

    Pros

    -Great first job
-It's small so you get experience in many different areas
    -Some great coworkers
    -Flexible & Understanding

    Cons

    - Nowhere to move up
    - Not competitive pay & benefits
    - Behind competitors at every turn
    - Boring workplace, boring products

    Advice to Management

Rejuvenate the company, get ahead of the curb, take some risks. Learn to manage your people, the morale is low.

    I worked at Corel full-time

    Pros

    • Lenient Office regulations.
    • Allocated days for sick leaves, vacation leaves, and emergency leaves.
    • You have your own workstation.
    • Fixed work schedule.

    Cons

    • The company focuses on selling new versions of their products each year instead of releasing innovative and good quality software.
    • Bad business decisions like acquiring small software companies yet having trouble of keeping them profitable.
    • Office politics, favoritism, and gossiping is the norm.
    • Constant lay-offs to cut expenses.
    • Salary is low and may remain the same each year.
    • Their loyal yet old customer base is dying out, they're not reaching out to younger customers.

    Advice to Management

The glory days of Corel has long been gone, a change in focus is needed.

I worked at Corel full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Working on different projects allowed me to learn and grow in my career. The people for the most part were very nice and you could get advice from Senior management without any issues.

You start off with three weeks vacation and get an extra day for every year you work there. Benefits were as good as any and they offered RRSP matching.

    Cons

Layoffs every year made for low morale. You never knew exactly when your time was up. Anyone who did put in extra hours and extra effort were not rewarded for it. This is not a place to look at for a long term career. Salary was below average. Training was promised but never delivered.

    Advice to Management

Layoffs every year is not good for business. You tell your employees that you made a profit and then slash jobs. Everyone is waiting for the other shoe to fall and you will have nobody to blame but yourself!

    Pros

    - Flexible work hours (*except in November*)
    - Great people to work with
    - Excellent work environment
    - Decent Benefits

    Cons

    -No Pay increases
-No one in upper / middle management listens to ideas, thoughts or suggestions
-Due to cutbacks and layoffs, you are expected to do the work of 5 people and catch hell when deadlines are not met

    Advice to Management

Consider paying your employees for what their worth, not what you think they should be paid.
