      Pros

      - Excellent resources for experimental physicists and engineers. The nanofabrication facility (CNF) is outstanding, providing access to state of the art tools and expert advise from staff. Cornell Center for Materials Research also has some great tools for microscopy, device characterization, and fabrication. - Tons of talks and seminars accessible to students. The graduate society is very active and organizes frequent social events. - For a small town, Ithaca has a lot of great restaurants, hiking, and things to do. - Stipend is reasonable. Health insurance included. - Welcoming environment for women and minorities.

      Cons

      - If you don't like the cold, you will have a bad time. Winters can be pretty harsh, making travel difficult. - Ithaca is far away from pretty much everything. - This is mostly universal for grad school, but work life balance can be non existent at times. Be prepared to spend late nights and weekends on campus. - Housing can be a little expensive, especially if you want to live near campus. - Career guidance for physics PhDs looking to pursue jobs outside of academia is basically nonexistent. Career services occasionally has events, but they are poorly advertised. - Food on campus is overpriced and not very good.

Dec 11, 2016 - Administrator in Ithaca, NY

      Pros

Intelligent workforce and community (overly qualified people are forced by limited opportunities in the community to work for Cornell), committed employees, beautiful campus (although it is constantly under construction), scenic Ithaca area with many restaurants, wineries, parks, and some cultural opportunities, easy commute with little traffic.

      Cons

Cornell realizes it is the main game in town, so salaries are depressed and options for growth are sometimes limited. Upper administration is reluctant to rid itself of abusive supervisors, and permits employees to be over-worked, undervalued and belittled by poorly trained or overly ambitious managers. Cornell is facing severe financial constraints and is constantly asking employees to do more with less, leading to a stressed and unhappy workforce. Rents in Ithaca are very high compared to outlying areas. Winters are very long, gray, and can be depressing.

      Cornell PhD Candidate

      Pros

Cornell is a huge organization, so I can only speak for the Chemical Engineering department. The research base of the department is very large, covering everything from cancer treatments to solar cells. The diversity of collaborations is very valuable, but you will need to reach outside the department to find specialized people to work with.

      Cons

Coming from NYC, Ithaca is the smallest town I've ever lived in, and it pinches sometimes. The combination of icy winters and steep hills is not great. But these are problems with the setting, not the university per se.

Hello, we appreciate you taking the time to fill out this review. It is great to hear that you are enjoying the collaboration among your peers from different department! If you ever want to take a break from Ithaca and get back down to NYC don't forget about the campus to campus bus service which provides round trips to NYC every day of the week!!
