    Pros

Decent Salary, and some coworkers become friends.

    Cons

Politics heavily influence promotions. Managers are ineffectual and rude. Management is not in touch with the demands of the position. Efficiency at your position is rewarded with doing someone else's work in addition to your own. Room for advancement doesn't exist.

    Advice to Management

Do the job for a few hours weekly. Base decisions on solid fact instead of who you personally like. Don't have meetings when a memo would cover the same territory.

I worked at Corning Cable Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay was good, and they had very low expectations of their employees

    Cons

They are too pc about everything, and the management can not make a decision to save their lives. They cycle through hiring and laying off like it is a regular lunar event. Any problem/issue gets a full volley of middle management thrown at it.

    Advice to Management

Hire a good workforce, and lobby to keep them.

    Pros

Especially folks on the floor are like a big family. Very little pressure to exceed expectations. Given the things listed under Cons, management is easily impressed. (If that's your goal.)

    Cons

Generally low level of technical knowledge they call capability. Even technology managers have very little technical background. Lots of programs to compensate for deficits are led by book smart folks with limited or no expertise. Pretentious use of acronyms runs rampant.

    Advice to Management

Try to understand the difference between presentation and expertise.

I have been working at Corning Cable Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent salary and benefits however vision insurance is a joke
    Flexible hours and telecommuting

    Cons

No career track guidance- you are on your own to network, look for opportunities and climb the ladder.
Reorganizations and layoffs guaranteed every 2 years
Definitely a "good ol boys club" going on, management is primarily males with military background

    Advice to Management

If you don't provide career paths for your younger employees, you are going to lose them and end up with no one to run the company after all of the older people retire.

    Pros

The employees (non-executives) are hard working, great people. They are like family and care about the company and crafting quality products.

    Cons

The company lays off and reorganizes at least every other year. They lay off the people with the most experience without ever really knowing their role in the first place. The CEO announced the upcoming relocation to Charlotte in December and at that time he PROMISED ALL EMPLOYEES would make the move and that there would be a place for everyone. In February they laid off around 20 people. There will be more. They will rape the company and then hire all new people once they move to Charlotte. Everyone knows this.

    Advice to Management

Stop pretending to uphold the Corning Values. The 'individual' is not valued at Corning Cable Systems. Also, all these many reorganizations which happen way too often gives the impression that our leaders are clueless.

    Pros

Great benefits. Nice schedule. Easy work once you learn it.

    Cons

Management changes hands too often. Morale on the floor is horrible due to poor management.

    Advice to Management

Treat people the way you would like to treated. Not like you are better than everyone else.

I have been working at Corning Cable Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Work is not to physically demanding and the work schedule gives people a lot of chances to take vacation. Pay is competitive and insurance is decent.

    Cons

Communication is an issue but with large companies this tends to happen. There are to many instances when a issue arises and instead of making an example out of the individual they use the blanket approach and change policies to punish the entire workforce. This can have an immediate effect on moral.

    Advice to Management

Keep striving to listen to the workforce and heed there opinions/concerns/suggestions. It should be a top priority to make the workers happy and in turn we work harder and appreciate the job more. This is turn makes the company more money and of course this makes Management extremely happy in the long run. You have to invest in the short term to reap the rewards in the long term.

I worked at Corning Cable Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The workplace is very receptive. Almost a family environment, despite the size of the company. Could be due to location in smaller city (Hickory). Good pay.

    Cons

Family like environment in the workplace among workers, but size of company comes with some inherent shortcomings such as a lot of bureaucratic issues (# of people in management can make getting things done take longer than it sometimes should)
