I worked at Corning as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots to learn, lots of room for growth

    Cons

As a contractor you do not get the benefits of a real employee. It is very difficult to become a true corning employee if not near impossible for most contractors.

    Advice to Management

Get better contracting agencies that will pay their employees appropriately.

I worked at Corning full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

people were very supportive. lots of smart people. interesting projects. group members treat each other like an extended family.

    Cons

its 5 hrs away from NYC and Philadelphia. Corning is a very small town with one street downtown that runs 4-5 blocks. If you go out for drinks on weekends you will definitely meet coworkers which is not always fun. not much to do during cold brutal winter. if you are big city person, you will most certainly not last too long as was the case with me and few other ppl I know. If you are international, not belonging to big communities like chinese or indian and prefer big city life- its going to be brutal to live there

    Pros

Great pay and incentives for bonuses. Ever evolving technology that allows employees to have hands on experience and input in old and new process and procedures changes.

    Cons

Very demanding leadership due to demanding shipment and quality deadlines.
Roasting work schedules makes it hard to balance home/work life.

I worked at Corning as an intern

    Pros

A company in traditional industry but highly focuses on innovation and motivation. As an intern, I had a great experience in Corning this past summer.

    Cons

It is located in upstate New York. If you are a city person, this place may be a little boring for you. But it is perfect for family life.

    I worked at Corning full-time

    Pros

Great pay and benefits. Scheduled time off. Good morale and atmosphere. Fun and exciting career, not a job. Made you feel important and that you made a difference.

    Cons

Shift schedule and layoffs. Hired temporary and convince you at interview you will become permanent. But they lay you off at 9 month the on a 1 year contract or after 3 months and so on and so forth.

    Advice to Management

Keep hard workers that are willing to do all the overtime and care about the products and the quality and what the company stands for don't lay them off if you're going to hire him temporary and tell them that the interview that will more than likely become permanent then that's what you should do you stick to your word and not lay people off.

I have been working at Corning full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Corning Inc. is largely diversified and is impacting the world economy and environment in many positive ways. The environmental technologies branch is ensuring air quality globally. Corning offers a very competitive wage and an excellent benefits package to compliment the satisfaction that you are making a positive difference for generations to come.

    Cons

The shop I work in is controlled by the union which tends to breed unmotivated workmanship. Additionally the seven day swing shift is a great disadvantage.

    Advice to Management

Offer straight shifts to facilitate some level of consistent lifestyle, and better health.

I have been working at Corning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Corning is a world-wide company. The benefits and pay are very good. They are an equal opportunity company and accept people from all walks of life.

    Cons

IT is no longer technical. A cookie cutter attitude exists across all segments of IT. It is hard to measure results since change is constant and then it's time for another change. Gartner's ideas rule. Your contributions don't amount to much unless you are in the right circle of long term employees/friends.

    Advice to Management

Change is needed within IT leadership. If you don't agree with the leadership, they will make your life difficult and place you in a dead-end role, by design.

I worked at Corning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Innovative company dedicated to research and development.

    Cons

Rat race culture. "Supportive team environment" is talked about but typically not put into action. People are overworked and management is inconsistent and cannot be trusted to take care of their employees. Managers in my experience are interested in moving up and if throwing someone below them under the bus or taking credit for someone else's work is a way to achieving that then so be it.

    Advice to Management

Be more supportive of the people making things happen and give them the resources they need instead of putting so much pressure on people to get things done in unrealistic circumstances. Give people credit for a job well done and help network for those below you doing a good job.
