I have been working at Corning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    People
    Cost of living
    Small town feel

    Cons

Corning knows it's the best option for many people in the area
Trend of hiring employees a band lower than their resume should warrant
    It is a small town
Characterization scientists are basically technicians forced to answer "multi-million dollar" questions for customers that at times don't know what questions to ask.

    Advice to Management

Instead of sticking to basics, invest in technology upgrading for characterization. Instead of hiring "subject matter experts" to work on outdated (and in my case, broken) technology,

I have been working at Corning full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Diversification means it's not as vulnerable to specific markets' volatility. Rarely dull. Always challenges. Lots of great people. Benefits are OK, although not stellar.

    Cons

The culture is stagnant. Development and growth are a struggle if you are not HIPO tagged early.

    Advice to Management

Engagement is important. Millenials will quit you if you persist in valuing sameness at the expense of what their unique talents offer you. Re-engage with Jamie's value of saying "Thank You" in ways that are meaningful.

    Pros

people were very supportive. lots of smart people. interesting projects. group members treat each other like an extended family.

    Cons

its 5 hrs away from NYC and Philadelphia. Corning is a very small town with one street downtown that runs 4-5 blocks. If you go out for drinks on weekends you will definitely meet coworkers which is not always fun. not much to do during cold brutal winter. if you are big city person, you will most certainly not last too long as was the case with me and few other ppl I know. If you are international, not belonging to big communities like chinese or indian and prefer big city life- its going to be brutal to live there

    Pros

Great pay and incentives for bonuses. Ever evolving technology that allows employees to have hands on experience and input in old and new process and procedures changes.

    Cons

Very demanding leadership due to demanding shipment and quality deadlines.
Roasting work schedules makes it hard to balance home/work life.

    Pros

Big corporation with a lot of money in several businesses

    Cons

Poor use of capital and people resources. Social reputation weighs heavily on career opportunities. The rural location of headquarters limits opportunities for family member employment.

    Advice to Management

What's worked in the past will not work in the future.

I have been working at Corning full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Interesting work, polite culture, global opportunities, a workforce that believes in the company and a variety of business divisions available

    Cons

Old boy network, slow advancement, still dominated by managers from the southern tier of NY and northern PA with little taste for new ideas

    Advice to Management

Flexible work schedules, better benefits, less focus on MBAs for management cadre

I worked at Corning as a contractor (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The work was interesting and provided a unique learning experience. Work facilities and IT support were top notch. Above adequate resources provided to be able to do the job efficiently.

    Cons

Remoteness of company location was a challenge. The small town life isn't for everyone and unfortunately the corporate headquarters is located far from any major cities.

    Advice to Management

Remember your roots and be mindful of the true intent of your values and mission. People are human beings and should be treated as such. People are not just numbers and do impact any business.
