I worked at Corning as an intern

    Pros

Pay was ok for area, lots of responsibility

    Cons

Lots of in-fighting between business units, all IT employees are outsourced through other firms like ProUnlimited- you don't "really" work for Corning, less benefits, etc.

    Advice to Management

    Work on firm culture

I worked at Corning full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Corning is a well-organized, well run manufacturing company. From the brief glimpse I saw while employed there, I saw many hard working individuals whom deeply loved their jobs. Furthermore, projects are extremely well funded, engineers here see a lot of their work implemented.

    Cons

Corning ebbs and flows with the tech markets information demands. The company usually cycles between layoffs and hiring frenzies, and there are many relics of this boom and bust cycle still readily apparent

    Advice to Management

Keep improving the process and funding process improvement. Corning is the best manufacturer of optical fiber, and it would be wise to continue investing in engineering to keep those margins and product quality high.

I worked at Corning as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots to learn, lots of room for growth

    Cons

As a contractor you do not get the benefits of a real employee. It is very difficult to become a true corning employee if not near impossible for most contractors.

    Advice to Management

Get better contracting agencies that will pay their employees appropriately.

I worked at Corning as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

I was able to interface with every department manager and many employees below them, providing me with details about the work experience at nearly every level of the company. I was able to operate with relative freedom while still acting on a group project.

    Cons

The employee culture was reserved and quiet. I did not feel that I had a good experience getting to know employees outside my team.

    Advice to Management

Develop a more structured way to open the internship and introduce the intern to the people surrounding them. Also, utilize the corporate intern development program and share the information about this program's events and conferences.
