I worked at Corrections Corporation of America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Awesome pay with good benefits and job security especially in TX/AZ/CA or ICE, Marshall, Federal Contract.

    Cons

No breaks, eat on the run when you can. Getting rid of the mandatory overtime will relived much of the "bad morale". Selfish management with a culture that carries enormous favoritism to there "cliques". "Boots on the grounds" the pillars of the facility are totally place on the side pretty much to a position with there is no actual one to one training. "Depression and Stress" is on the rise as for a correctional... officer--they need to take care of there staff for example an "awareness project focus-PTSD". The zero policy tolerance is total sham, this should not be just based on he or she bases, need to be brought up back to a more equal and diverse environment without favoritism to the gender or person: testimony, background (ethical performance) and actual facts. The good line staff are truly under appreciated most of the time and not honor for for there skills and work ethics.

    Advice to Management

Listen to staff is one my main priorities, provide the adequate help to an inmate and staff (a just resolution with future preventive risks) and have a better legal support team for staff. Don't award the staff with seniority only but too recognize the energetic and well rounded meritorious, who are happy to be there and willing to sacrifice and provide the skills and leadership.

    Pros

Decent money especially when overtime was available. Good Benefits Overtime available Camaraderie between employees was nice. Company parties were pretty nice too.

    Cons

Must be in a locked dorm with detainees for 12 hours with very few breaks. ICE has very strict policies for employees NOT so much detainees.

    Advice to Management

Dorm employees need more breaks ESPECIALLY night shift.

I have been working at Corrections Corporation of America full-time

    Pros

Salary (if you are lucky; most facilities pay very poorly for the amount of hours worked), 401K with 5% match. Landing a job with CCA allows one to get their feet wet in the world of corrections (If you can last 6 months and actually enjoy the work, do yourself a favor and apply for corrections at the state or federal level where you can have a pension, job security, and good benefits). If you are fairly attractive... and proficient in the art of brown nosing you can obtain easy posts and promote quickly without much merit or experience.

    Cons

Unethical company, no job security, poor training, dearth of leadership in supervisory positions, extreme favoritism, low morale, shortage of staff resulted in lots of mandatory overtime, potentially dangerous outcomes given inmate/detainee population. Corecivic/CCA doesn't give a darn about protecting the community or reducing recidivism. This company is all about the bottom line, often at the expense of its... employees.

    Advice to Management

As a multi-billion dollar corporation there is more than enough money flowing through your coffers to hire more Correction/Detention Officers to run your facilities safely and effectively. Understaffing is a critical problem throughout the company. Stop jeopardizing the safety of your employees in order to turn a profit.

    Pros

Good benefits, amount of PTO & Holidays, good 401(k) match after 1 year, lots of OT, ability to promote quickly if competent

    Cons

I worked at Corrections Corporation of America for more than 3 years

    Pros

Enjoyed the type of work I did. Able to work as much OT as I wanted. Got paid pretty good! Pretty good benefits

    Cons

Facility always under- staffed; Only 1 Officer assigned to secure 60 - 100 inmates my his/her self; i.e., 1 Officer worked B, C, D and F pods; plus had to run the yard and kitchen. Many times put in very dangerous situation that could have caused injury or death; inmates able to break out of cells at will. Management was unconcerned regarding safety of the officers; officers were just another body on the... post.

    Advice to Management

Start showing a genuine interest and concern about officers and their safety; don't just give lip service! Support and Back up officers who go over and above the call of duty. Make facility a safer work environment!!!

I worked at Corrections Corporation of America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pays better than some state corrections. Good benefits, excellent 401k. Plenty of overtime!!

    Cons

The turn over if so high because these people in management will literally such the life out of you. Three employees sent out to the hospital for heart related issues. People being forced to work 7 days in a row 12 hours a day. The management talk down to CO's and make then feel two inches tall and when it's brought to anyone higher.. They shrug their shoulders and walk away. The next day your takes from your post... to work the worst part of the building because you opened your mouth. So when you realize that this is bull and leave all the time and effort you put in.. And certificates and awards don't mean anything when you get out into the real world again. Work here to save up your money and get your feet wet in corrections, then move on. Anything longer if not worth your time or your health.
