    Positive Outlook

I worked at Corwin Press as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Surrounded by positive and encouraging people!
-Opportunites to learn a lot about the publishing industry
-Management truly cares about your voice and gives you a seat at the table (even an intern)

I had such an amazing experience working as an intern for Corwin. Everyone wants you to succeed and will provide you with the support and resources to do so. Especially for an intern, which tends to be at the lower end of the chain. But they will give you important tasks to do and you will learn so much and gain experience within the industry. Management truly listens and cares about what you have to say. There's no micromanaging and it's a very relaxed environment.

    Cons

    - Some days it gets real slow
    - often get to do tedious tasks
    - no guarantee employement after internship

    Advice to Management

I wish there was a position open so I could have stayed longer !!

I have been working at Corwin Press full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

-Gain a lot of valuable experience in Editorial
    -Free lunch once a week
    -Amazing benefits

    Cons

-Not much opportunity for growth from the bottom
    -Strong focus on promoting executives
    -The office is drab
-Low pay for a TON of work
-A lot of talk about professional development and supporting growth, but minimal action to back that up
    -SO MUCH FAVORITISM

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting executives regularly so people lower on the totem poll can also have opportunities for promotion or raises "in the budget."

    Pros

Great benefits and a part of the Sage family.

    Cons

Under performing and not hitting sales targets, but still trying the same old. Looking for fast growth instead of solid well planned out solid publications. Behind the times in digital publishing

    "good product - poor management"

I worked at Corwin Press full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Corwin does have a commitment to producing quality materials and the benefits are good.

    Cons

The management team (specifically the President of the company) provide no real leadership and direction for the staff. At times it felt like we were riding an rudderless ship. Also, most of the senior management have no actual teaching experience or haven't worked in any aspect of school administration. I think having actual experience as an educator would help management to connect better w/ their audience.

    Advice to Management

Stronger leadership to help employees grow and provide some direction. Corwin is still a small fish in a large pond and it seems like mgt, has no desire to see it grow into anything bigger.

    Positive Outlook

    Pros

Corwin is growing and gaining market share due to a new vision established by the company's president, Mike Soules.

    Cons

Company culture is demoralizing--unrealistic demands and no support. Very hierarchical, with only a few managers deserving of their positions.

    Advice to Management

Cultivate and value the people you have on staff. Address the backbiting and tattletale work environment.

    Pros

The company is a K12 education publisher. What's to hate about that?

    Cons

The company is trying to do too many things and has not scaled up its staff, leaving many overworked. There also does not seem to be much relief in sight. There's a culture in the company that this is just the way it's going to be. For an organization that has asked so much of its employees--laying off a number of them a year or so ago--it seems like management should be a bit more appreciative. The remaining staff has kept up their passion and excitement for the work and their morale despite all the work and changes that are being thrown at them. Rather than making them feel like they're still not doing enough, planning for growth and providing some hope would go a long way with employees.
