I worked at Cost Plus part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

work was relatively easy, interview was also easy and pretty basic

    Cons

there's a quota you have to meet for number of people you sign up for the rewards program, management is stressed and would constantly pressure employees to do better

I have been working at Cost Plus part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Most friendly, teamwork oriented environment I've ever worked in. I love my GM and just about every person I work with like a friend, and that makes it easier to work as a team and be the best store we can be. Flexible when it comes to personal life and extenuating circumstances. Also tend to promote from within, whenever a position happens to open up.

    Cons

Ridiculously low hours for almost all employees except Supervisors and GMs, if you're a department head or below you're going to want a second job. Even some supervisors have other jobs to make ends meet if they have families. I get paid an alright wage, but the hours I get make me still live paycheck to paycheck.

    Advice to Management

If you want people to push SMS and Explorer program, give stores incentive to. Releasing numbers and boohooing over stores who's numbers are low isn't enough to get your minimum wage sales associates fired up to sign people up. When you get 15 hours a week (at most) as a sales associate how can you be expected to be passionate about your job or it's reward program? Also, instead of having 10+ sales associates who get 15 hours or less, hire associates with more availability who can make a decent paycheck on higher part time hours. Unbelievably low hours make for heavy rotation of associates because they find other opportunities that are full time, or at least high number part time positions. I love what I do in my position, but will most likely not stay because I'm underpaid/underworked hourly.

I worked at Cost Plus full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

good sample sales, attractive products, staff in other departments are nice

    Cons

The buyers have attitudes and egos that are pretty comical and sad seeing that Cost Plus is based in Alameda and sell products that are about the price point of Walmart. Most of the buyers have worked there for a decade or more and have visited but never worked in a major design, retail and fashion market like New York, Paris, Milan or London.

    Advice to Management

Please encourage your buyers to be decent human beings

    Pros

Fun products and co-workers. Great prices.

    Cons

Push member enrollment so much it annoys customers. Took too long to get out of the store at night when closing. Issues not addressed until review time, which is very poor management.

    Advice to Management

Communicate things regularly with your employees. Don't have such high expectations for the member program. If people don't want it, they don't want it!

I have been working at Cost Plus full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Get to work with friendly shoppers. Recieve a check every 2 weeks. Able to for the most part have a fixed schedule.

    Cons

Hostile attitude by district management. Company does not value supervisors. Poor pay even with great performance per reviews . Extremly Poor benefits . Will be working on your lunch by answering phone calls and helping employees. Major problem to take earned vacation off and use earned sick time.

    Advice to Management

Know how to value employees including supervisors. Learn how to communicate in a motivating manner opposed to a hostile manner. Stop blaming staff for the retail crisis and take a good look at the reality of how buisness is changing. Give better pay to staff. Company needs new upper management with new ideology in buisness and how to make employees happy at store level

I worked at Cost Plus part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

It was an easy job, fairly flexible scheduling (manager dependent)

    Cons

Everyone who wasnt the manager tried acting like they were to newer employees thinking that they were showing initiative or something but really they were just on a power trip. The pay sucked.

    Advice to Management

Too many chiefs, not enough indians
