I have been working at Costa full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    * Has a good training programme * There are opportunities for additional training courses * Company wants to see its employee's grow and move up within Costa

    Cons

    * Compass wage very rarely accurate * Low wage compared to Whitbread Costa * No employee discounts and other benefits * Rarely see senior management and will not talk to staff

    Advice to Management

Don't tell someone to do something you will not do yourself.

I have been working at Costa full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Okay Pay, good progression but hard to get beyond a SM level, holidays are 25 days plus bank holidays, 50% potential bonus

    Cons

Long hours, without additional pay, store is closed on Xmas day only, additional hours are just expected so if short staffed ect SM just has to fill in regardless of how many hours are worked, When holidays are taken any additional labour used has to be worked by you to get it back! Bonuses are good but difficult to get & normally require additional hours, working from home on days off ect

    Advice to Management

SM holidays in the labour budget with Cover, career opportunities above a SM Level Bonuses extremely difficult to earn Sort out customer feedback system to a fair level red =-1 amber =0 green =+1 not the current red = -2 amber =-1 & green =1/2

Former Employee - Barista - Store Manager in Bristol, England
    Doesn't Recommend
    Neutral Outlook
    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Costa full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Came across some great people to work with. Sense of fun - especially as a barista - chance to play with latte art etc

    Cons

Unsociable hours, called into work on days off, calls at 3am about work (even before becoming a store manager). Pay doesnt reflect workload

    Advice to Management

Get rid of the labour budgets! you are forcing good people to leave because they dont have the 'work/life balance' due to shrinking labour budgets but increased sales targets

I worked at Costa full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Company provide lots of training .If anyone have real desire to move up to management level ,its possible. Its good place for students to work part time. Questionable is it really want afterall.

    Cons

I do not think they value workers very much . They pay very poor wages. Also pay is very poor for assistant managers and managers. Very often managers need to work as barista and plus need to do management job where have a amazing amount paper work . Over time they adds more stores for managers to look after without raising the pay. Company really do not care is it possible meet the targets or not , sometimes...

    I worked at Costa

    Pros

Free coffee on shift, that's about the only pro.

    Cons

Awful pay, long hours, no support, holiday pay not paid, no training, dangerous working condition, bad management, stressful,

    Advice to Management

Look after staff a little better and properly train them. Pay staff what they are legally owed.

I worked at Costa full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The people, making the coffees, the customers, good training for Barista, Barista Maestro and Assistant Managers, amazing conferences

    Cons

Limited staffing, have to work twice as hard to hit budgets due to bad labour budgets, lack of training for managers, denied the chance to take qualifications wanted for personal gain,

    Advice to Management

Look after your store managers as well as other staff- if people want to learn that's normally a good sign that they will work

I have been working at Costa full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Franchise is good to work for as your protected as your franchise partners are responsible for everything but also you don't get all the same benifits as you do at costa equity! Your always looked after but you work a lot harder with tight labour budgets! The pay isn't as good but you do half the work of a equity manager, much more scope for promotion in franchise within stores just not admin or area roles

    Cons

Not the same benfits as equity Less pay Can't share staff Costa are more strict with standards Harder labour budgets No whitbread discount only costa
