I have been working at Council on Foundations full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Incredibly entrepreneurial and innovative environment. Very welcoming staff and organizational culture. Leadership is very receptive to new ideas and gives a lot of latitude for creativity and strategic thinking. Forward thinking and supportive CEO.

    Cons

I haven't experienced any significant challenges.

I worked at Council on Foundations full-time

    Pros

Unlimited Vacations is about the only benefit that stands out

    Cons

Leadership was very "Diva" like. Did not provide leadership value nor really direct the organization.

I worked at Council on Foundations full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The vacation package is a pro.

    Cons

Basically everything else is a con. I had the very unfortunate experience of working under an extremely controlling individual who behaved like Regina George from Mean Girls. She even had her minion followers from other departments. It was uncomfortable and so odd. Outside of that terrible experience, the place is toxic. It's full of self-important people who enjoy their professional-sounding titles and inflated paychecks,...

    Advice to Management

You should probably just go ahead and merge the company or pull the plug. You all know where COF is heading. In today's world, your work is unnecessary and insignificant, and you are quite terrible at it anyhow.

    Cons

This place is dysfunctional. I've been here 2 years and it has been a mess the whole time.

I worked at Council on Foundations full-time

    Pros

The members are interesting, fun, and looking for specific help. Many brilliant staff have come in enthusiastic and left defeated.

    Cons

Odd choices on when the organization speaks up on issues and when it remains silent. Once identified as "not on board," people were aggressively managed and reprimanded. Culture of retaliation is real.

    Advice to Management

Hopeful for board engagement during transition. The CEO was not the only issue. Look at the executive leadership. "Loyalty" rewarded. There is a disconnect between what the field needs and what it can pay for. Visionaries understand law and business and still see opportunities for organization/members.

I worked at Council on Foundations full-time

      Pros

Good vacation policy but it comes at a high cost! Terrible leadership, can't balance a budget (the CEO and executives are overpaid and lack basic business experience), and worst part: NO accountability for anything. You can basically get away with murder and they will never figure it out.

      Cons

It's hard to pick one single thing but I would probably start with the culture is DEPRESSING! Always problems but never any solutions. The leaderships always points fingers and never take responsibility for anything. Also, who wants to work in a place that will probably close doors soon because they can't figure out how to balance the budget. Here is a hint: stop over paying miserable and useless executives!

      Advice to Management

Go away. No one likes you or respects you in the field. Now that I am on the other side, I can see and hear how the sector basically has no respect for the work you do.

      Pros

The staff at COF are amazing. They were some of the smartest, most effective colleagues I have ever had.

      Cons

Leadership is a living nightmare. It is an extremely political environment--lots of backstabbing and maneuvering. It's an exhausting place to work and you are constantly forced to apologize for past, present, and future mistakes COF makes.

      Advice to Management

      Listen to staff.

I worked at Council on Foundations full-time for more than 2 years

      Pros

Great people, many of the staff formed lasting friendships.

      Cons

CEO is not connected and arrogant. Didn't care about the employees and there was never opportunity for growth and raises
