I worked at County of Kern full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Training can be fairly good. Some departments don't give proper training for each position. Schedules and pretty good and supervisors can be flexible with schedules instead of taking time off.

    Cons

Wages are not very good and communication lacks. Promotions are not really smiled upon and most departments do not encourage their employees to try and move up. Training for other positions are VERY LIMITED.

I worked at County of Kern full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Good hard-working people in the IT, tight group. Lots of friends. When budget allowed, some training classes were available.

    Cons

Low budget - no training classes, no outside of town travel for seminars or conferences even offered at no cost. Outdated IT equipment to work with. Mutlilayer bureaucracy. The environment should be faster to accept change. Hard to get rid of lazy back-stabbing employees. Local Union that doesn't help to resolve issues.

    Advice to Management

Accept change, offer better training opportunities to staff. Reward hard work.

    Pros

Protected by Civil Service Commission Rules

    Cons

Low pay, no continuity among or within job classifications meaning, the same job title will have completely different functions in different departments but the same pay regardless of duties.

    Advice to Management

Increase pay, lower out of pocket cost for insurance.

I have been working at County of Kern full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Helping people who really need it to get back on their feet

    Cons

Management sucks!!! They don't care about the employees. Mental stress leads to high blood pressure strokes and heart attacks. Too many of my friends have suffered.

    Advice to Management

Learn to care about those on the front line as much as you care about your status. Big fish in a little pond ... get over yourselves.

    Pros

Steady, reliable job. Lots of interesting training's. Clerical duties are not difficult.

    Cons

Working in a welfare office can be stressful. No room in small offices for growth. No incentive to do better other than your own self-worth and dignity!

    Advice to Management

When you make changes in procedures get the line personnel's opinion before you decide. They are the ones that have to implement changes!

I worked at County of Kern full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I worked at kmc for a total of 19 yrs. Knowing what I know now I should have never left. It has been the best place I have ever worked at in my entire adult life. No one ever bothered me they just let me do my job. yes I was young and at timesgot into a little trouble they corrected me I learned and went forward. My mother was brought here in her last days of dealing with ovarian cancer, I could not have asked for better people to take care of her. Because the hospital liked and enjoyed me as an employee I can truly say my mom had the best that kmc could offer.

    Cons

none, I can't think of any negativity to say about kmc. It is a close environment to work in with each other but I think this adds for a more team playing environment.

    Advice to Management

this hospital is the best I have ever experienced. second to none and let no one tell you different. You know what you do and you do it well. You go kmc

    Cons

No room for motivated driven people, Benefits are not great, Issues never get resolved, management is non-responsive to problems, endless meetings, no room to advance, no promotions from within, Bernie Sanders dream

    Advice to Management

Quit and get all new administration

I worked at County of Kern full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of overtime which could be used as vacation days. Not too much responsibility, and there is a good work/life balance.

    Cons

Micromanaging, boring, underpaid. There is no room for creative freedom. It's really a dead-end job where they talk about how good the benefits are, but in reality they're not any better than private sector jobs.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees like people, learn how to train employees, pay a livable wage. I understand that it is a public sector job, so some things are out of your hands, but try to make the workplace a more positive environment.
