I have been working at County of Marin (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The people really are the best part about it; people form lifelong relationships with their co-workers. Flexibility (many departments offer 9-80's), good work-life balance, family-friendly pension. Most employees are truly there to do what is best for the County and its residents.

    Cons

The environment can be quite political. Change happens very slowly. Management is silo'ed in some departments, but not all.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your employees. Get to know your staff and listen to their observations; a lot of information does not filter up.

I worked at County of Marin full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

In general, the management at Marin County do a good job of giving credit to and valuing their employees. In my Department, which was in stormwater, my boss was great about giving me opportunities to develop my skillset and giving me a great balance of coaching and autonomy. I really liked working here.

    Cons

For me the main downside was that Marin County didn't have any job types that were specifically in my main area of interest, sustainable agriculture. If they did, I would have tried to stay with them.

Also, while I had a great experience working with them, I think people in different departments may have had more mixed experiences, depending on the pace that you are used to in a work environment.

I have been working at County of Marin full-time

    Pros

If you apply yourself, you can work on interesting work and rise to the top in terms of responsibility quickly. The county of marin is a very progressive county, and the internal organizations, for the most part reflect that. This is very work life balance friendly, its a ghost town after 4:30.

    Cons

your additional responsibility will be the only reward for your hard work, as compensation across departments is tied to years of service....ie longevity. And there is a lot of dead wood personnel in every department who are just eeking it out so they can retire ad 90% of their salary. This has the effect of scaring off high performers from staying, and then the management is eventually made up of those - who couldn't or wouldn't leave, not a recipe for high performing teams.

    Advice to Management

every department needs a top/down reform

    Pros

I enjoy the people at the County of Marin. They are very kind and very supportive.

    Cons

Government is always very slow going and that is the most frustrating thing. Processes take a long time and work can get pushed behind because everything is a slower pace.
