Good experience but at a price

      Pros

Most people that work here are nice. Good benefits working with the county, and a stable paycheck. Lots of overtime.

      Cons

Poor boundaries from the top down, makes it hard to set your own boundaries because the culture is to just give up your time as needed. The caseload and amount of work expected from workers is so high and very stressful. Not all supervisors are supportive or helpful.

Good for content folks, bad for emerging leaders

      Pros

Good benefits and plenty of opportunities to stay low and work as long as you can to get vested and then eventually retire with good retirement benefits. Very little incentive for changing to improve HHSA since the board is GOP controlled so the motto is why improve health delivery when it's not our problem to begin with so there is little to no urgency to improve services although this might change in a few years when the board will likely be split between GOP and DEM control when term limits pushes out most of the current board of supervisors. Should be interesting to see the leadership dynamic in San Diego change.

      Cons

Very poor leadership development programs. Many of the division leadership at HHSA and CWS were pretty much folks who were the last people standing and promoted into their roles. Nick Macchione, HHSA Director, is pretty ambitious and has good leadership traits but he came from the outside, while those working under him haven't really been given good skills development. My previous chief in CWS and supervisor both did not have a backbone and could not keep our team in check and whenever something went wrong they blamed the employees instead of looking at how we could collaborate better to fix issues. Nick Macchione was great but wish supervisors/chiefs/asst chiefs were as good as him. No mobility, took a pay cut to join the federal government as a GS 7 and four years later I ended up in a GS 14 position responsible for large national programs and received great developmental opportunities that I would have never received at COSD.

      High pressure job environment

      Pros

      The job has good benefits.

      Cons

Management wants a lot of calls processed per hours bottom line. No matter what type of call you have, at end of day they just want numbers. No matter how complex or even if you were not trained on that type of case a customer is calling about. You are responsible to diagnose problem, fix the issue and/or process a report for the customer all in 15 minutes. In a eight hour work day 27 calls is the minimum expectation. Probation period for this job is one year. Pressure cooker environment, low pay, and low morale. Employee openly talk about new job or transferring out of this position. Difficult to master this job, rules change on a daily basis. If you are someone with a photographic memory, love a high pressure job environment, low pay, and angry customers this job is for you.

The County of San Diego has a lot to offer in terms of variety and stability

      Pros

The provided competitive pay and good benefits. Once you get hired with the County it opens up the door to transfer to other departments within the organization.

      Cons

The downside to working for the government is that funding issues can impact your workload as well as job security at times.

      Decent place to work

      Pros

The people are nice and there are good benefits unless you're an intern like me. I was allowed flexible hours and creative control over most of my projects, but this is not the norm. Although I was an intern, I was treated like anyone else on staff and was even looked to for guidance at times.

      Cons

Everything works at government speed which can be a bit like watching paint dry. There are many projects that involves hands from several different offices so it can really slow things down.

Poor Management Team - High Turnover - Low Morale

      Pros

Good Benefits & Paid Holidays. Field work allows you to get out of the office. Nice equipment.

      Cons

You are treated like meat. You work tirelessly for little reward...and have to reapply for promotions. No mentor-ship is provided. The supervisor does not provide adequate guidance or feed back. You are treated like a temporary employee and a moments displeasure to your supervisor is grounds for immediate firing without any cause being given. There is a high turnover rate here as 16 inspectors have left since June 2015. ALSO BE ADVISED that is you do not pass probation, the County DOES NOT PAY FOR ACCRUED VACATION. I lost 36 hours of vacation. Management dismissed 3 of us on 1 day with no warning or reason.

      Bad upper management.

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good benefits, steady work. Management know very little about what their workers actually do so it's easy to get by doing very little work This makes the job very non satisfying.

      Cons

Upper management takes advantage of staff and is very disconnected from and disrespectful of them, offers few and very stingy raises. The closest they come to showing appreciation of workers is to remind them that they could have eliminated your position. They do not value their workforce at all. Hundreds of members of upper management draw six figure salaries while they let the public openly criticize workers who are being paid very poorly.
