I have been working at County of San Diego full-time

    Pros

Stable, good location. Great employer if you just want to work a regular day/schedule. Offers a pension.

    Cons

    1. Low pay 2. No incentive to work for a promotion. This is because HR supposedly sets the criteria. It is not up to managers or people with a knowledge of your qualifications or aptitude.

    Advice to Management

Experience, certifications, references, and work should have more weight for internal promotional opportunities. Not saying specific words or phrases within an interview.

I worked at County of San Diego for more than 8 years

    Pros

Most of those working at the County of San Diego came into it understanding that their will become wealthy.. These individuals are hard working, caring and committed.

    Cons

Board of Supervisors for decades catered to the well-to-do and forced on how to get reelected. Two (2) BILLION in cash assests not help those in need, but left in Wall Street banks to show their conservative republican constituants how they can run the county on "a dime" and on the backs of; low-pay (lowest of all counties in souther california...lower than Kern) County Workers.

    Advice to Management

to those who know this is wroing, but scared for your job...speak up.

I worked at County of San Diego

    Pros

    The job has good benefits.

    Cons

Management wants a lot of calls processed per hours bottom line. No matter what type of call you have, at end of day they just want numbers. No matter how complex or even if you were not trained on that type of case a customer is calling about. You are responsible to diagnose problem, fix the issue and/or process a report for the customer all in 15 minutes. In a eight hour work day 27 calls is the minimum... expectation. Probation period for this job is one year. Pressure cooker environment, low pay, and low morale. Employee openly talk about new job or transferring out of this position. Difficult to master this job, rules change on a daily basis. If you are someone with a photographic memory, love a high pressure job environment, low pay, and angry customers this job is for you.

I have been working at County of San Diego full-time for more than a year

    Pros

The County of San Diego has some of the best benefits I have had. There is so much that you can do with the county and explore different areas.. There is a great life/work balance. Managers respect vacation/sick time. There are some great people who really want to serve our communities. Great job for a family-oriented parent seeking steady income with no stress.

    Cons

The pay is low in comparison with the market (but the benefits make up for it). Because of the stability and unions it is difficult to fire an employee...therefore, you have employees who do the BARE MINIMUM to get by until retirement. At the County is where I saw some of the LAZIEST and incompetent workers. They were never disciplined because of unions etc. The social workers are awfully mean to their... clients. Its a tough and low-paying job, but i still believe clients deserved to be respected and treated nicely. Although there are so many departments that employees can transfer to, there is not much promotional growth/encouragement. If you want to grow and learn and experience, this is not the place.
