I have been working at County of Santa Barbara full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The Santa Barbara County Organization is a great organization. They have been some changes to the county culture that are positive Eloy transforming the organization for the positive.

    Cons

Housing costs in South County is very challenging. The percentage of medical plan costs for a family of four can be challenging for entry level employees.

    Advice to Management

Look at making medical costs more reasonable to larger families by increasing county contributions.

I have been working at County of Santa Barbara full-time

    Pros

Great benefits and compensation. Nice balance between work and life too. Career path is defined. There are many opportunities to advance within a department and also within the County.

    Cons

Work can become monotonous. Management is focused on the big picture, so employees are not often heard. While career path is defined, it takes some time to get there.

    Pros

The location is beautiful and calming. Most employees are friendly and willing to put in extra effort in a crunch. There is satisfaction in the work itself. There are some efforts to maintain or increase morale.

    Cons

Compensation does not match costs of living in the area. Medical premiums skyrocket if you need coverage for more than yourself (spouse, family). A "clique" culture exists among employees, which is negative to the work environment as a whole. A significant portion of employees are obviously on the road to retirement and continue to arrive to the office each day (albeit late) so that they may reach the magic number before they watch a slideshow staring themselves at their retirement party. Management support of work-life balance could improve.

    Advice to Management

Audit programs and hold management accountable. Focus on quality and not just quantity. Support fresh ideas and be open to change. Reward good service and quality work. Hold all employees to the same standard.

I worked at County of Santa Barbara full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I worked in the Fiscal department of Santa Barbara County - Department of Alcohol Drug and Mental Health Services. Everyone I encountered there were friendly good hearted people. I was well compensated for the work I was performing. I left to pursue an entrepreneurial endeavor I was previously committed to which began to preoccupy more of my time. Laid back culture, flexible in choosing 8-5 or 9-6, and over time offer 80-9 (every other friday off) if you show you can perform and get your work done. No place better to live and work than Santa Barbara.

    Cons

Government work is always a little bureaucratic, structured with procedures, and not exactly an entrepreneurial culture. This isn't necessarily a bad thing as more structure leads to more certainty and less stress.

    Advice to Management

Having only worked there for a few months I cannot make a informed decision.

Management has their heads in the cloud, it's all about them. Advancement is almost non existent
