I worked at County of Ventura, California full-time

    Pros

Employees were friendly and very helpful in making sure questions were answered.

    Cons

Due to being an intermittent position some of the supervisors didn't care to remember your name thus making one feel unworthy. Also, there was obvious favoritism exhibited from a couple of the supervisors to other intermittent employees.

    Advice to Management

It may be an intermittent position for 1 to 4 months but it doesn't hurt to show a bit of respect towards others.

I worked at County of Ventura, California full-time

    Pros

Good entry level social work position that makes a difference in the lives of clients. Excellent case management experience within the county system. Good benefits and training. Opportunities to advance in other social work positions.

    Cons

Pay is low and union is unorganized and unnecessarily militant/anti leadership. Passive aggressive competition between peers and supervisors is difficult to navigate.

    Advice to Management

Pay more attention to the culture of the organization and those who bring others down to get ahead

I have been working at County of Ventura, California full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Initially, the support from leadership seems genuine. Be wary. If you get to know the right people and build a network, you’re more likely to succeed. good pension just got to put in your time.

    Cons

Benefits keep getting worse, especially the health care.
It’s the classic good ol’ boys club. If Upper-leaders like you, relish in that because it doesn’t last. The Human Resources department is a joke. They expect others to live up to standards that they can’t even accomplish and don’t hold the proper people accountable. Disillusioned about how great they are, and the county leaders seem to entrust this group far too much without verification or input from those who work with them. They seem to be so disorganized and constantly make excuses for their inability to get it together.

This place is all about cliques and phony relationships. If you stroke the proper egos, you’ll be in the good graces. If you don’t, good luck!
Having leaders who are rumored to be disingenuous as there are constant whispers of manipulation and rumors of inappropriate behaviors that run rampant in this county. Whether there’s truth to it or not, it doesn’t feel good to feel you’re working for someone/people that aren’t ethical.
Can you say crazy dysfunctional county?

    Advice to Management

Get to know your teams personally. We dedicate so much
of our lives to make the county look good while providing needed services to residents. I worked at County of Ventura, California full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent pay, great services available for clients, good benefits but not with the hostility workers must endure. Very difficult to transfer within the different departments, but it’s great that there are several programs available to serve the clients

    Cons

Incompetent upper management in the ADP department AEB unethical behaviors, work place bullying, sporadically relocating employees on a whim, deterring qualified staff from staying with the company due to poor management skills, blaming supervisors for the failures of upper management, and overall bureaucracy and workplace politics.

    Advice to Management

Needs a competent, caring, qualified program manager Or a series of trainings to teach how to lead effectively.

I worked at County of Ventura, California full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Civic minded work is always a plus. The work is actually fun.

    Cons

Blatant favoritism is played. If you aren't a girl, you will treat you like the scum of the earth. With so few full time workers, the environment created is dog eat dog. I saw 2 full time employees leave to transfer to other companies, not even jobs inside the building, to get away from the toxicity. Who gives up a full time job with benefits in the government? I feel that says a lot about management.

    Advice to Management

Take a serious look at management in the elections division. It was disheartening see a certain someone play favorites with all of the girls and watch soccer in his office. There needs to be a meritocracy in the office. There is a reason why full time employees are leaving to get away from it.
