I have been working at Covance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are really great to work with and the environment is nice due to that.

    Cons

There is no opportunity for advancement, once you are hired they already know if they are ever going to advance you or not. The attendance policy is horrible and there is no help at all with it.

    Advice to Management

They need to help everyone to advance and not use favoritism or politics in the workplace for advancement it should be on your work and being here everyday.

I worked at Covance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Continuous improvement
Lots of training - career improvement
Absolutely fantastic people to work with
Supervisors are great and really care
Fast paced, get it done attitude

    Cons

Some silos between departments and communication issues
Upper management appears to be a bit out of touch with the day to day of what goes on. In addition, financial predictions and forecasts were not at all reliable from finance.

    Advice to Management

Be honest and demonstrate the same transparency that you want to see of your departments.
Try your best not to sugarcoat or doublespeak. We're all adults and here to support you.

I have been working at Covance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers, good flexibility and work/life balance

    Cons

Benefits have really gone down hill. Job security is a concern. New hire training is non existent. Vacant positions are not being filled leading to gaps in work flow.

    Advice to Management

Bring in better benefits. Hold managers responsible for training of new hires when they start not at the end of the year. Fill open positions instead of trying to add more responsibility to over worked employees. Promote employees that are ready and willing to take on more.

I worked at Covance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Genuinely nice, caring people. I hated to leave them

    Cons

Unrealistic expectations; you were given 7 days of instruction, but not allowed to take notes home to study. This means you either had to cheat, or have a photographic memory. VERY high turnover with no expectation of success; there is a staffing office here which exists solely to 'feed' more people into the customer service position. It is a situation of using the employees then discarding when they can't keep up with the workload (because they never had a chance to really learn things), which certainly saves money on paying health insurance costs. This seems a shockingly money-wasting way to do business. Just get your employees, TRAIN them right, and keep them. Covance has a very bad name in Greenfield, IN, not just the call center, but among all the departments. My class alone went from 14 people to 4. Does that tell you anything?

    Advice to Management

Deal with your (staffing agency) employees honestly. Don't treat them like toilet paper (use them, then flush them).

I have been working at Covance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Excellent people work here and are always willing to help when you need it. Great if you want to work remotely. Easy but fair training schedule, good cafeteria, and they let you move around and actively promote career development

    Cons

Insurance and benefits are getting worse, suggestions are not acted upon unless it affects upper management, work-life balance can be slightly askewed

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and take real, visible action on their suggestions

I worked at Covance as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

Onboarding training sounded positive and promoted team spirit

    Cons

Lengthy training but not good training: hours upon hours of different Covance floor employees literally reading training slides to the class who have never trained a class before. The Associates or Supervisor's that are the class trainer's may or may not have ever trained a class before. A company this large should have an official training department and not make hourly workers train a class while still being responsible for their daily productivity quota. The training class I attended started with about 25 and ended with 5 trainees after 6 weeks. A training Supervisor shared her training class started w/45 and is down to 2 four years later. Most employees in the CRM - are hired as temps with very low wages and none of the Covance benefits pkg. Conversion takes about a year and during that temp year the temp is not permitted to apply for other divisions or programs within Covance or LabCorp. The turnover rate is huge because training is long but poor quality and the productivity standards are high with little benefit. Extremely unprofessional work environment: no dress code which promotes a non-professional mindset, desk set up on banquet tables with no ergonomic adherence, Supervisors "dress up" in crazy costumes and literally parade though the work floor which is condescending and demeaning to the employees, many of the layers of management have only been with Covance for 1-2 years and do not have the experience or professionalism to manage and train employees. Different Pharma companies are represented in various ways which makes for no consistency though out Covance. The technology in my area is basically a 90's based software using DOS commands and very step oriented and antiquated. Covance should hire direct and explain what the position is before hand to pre-qualify the fit. Everything is very secretive about the position so perspective employees when talking to the temp agency have no idea what they will be doing once hired. It is obvious Covance hired as many warm bodies and employ's the "throw them at the wall theory to see how many stick" which is a horrible long term team building approach.

    Advice to Management

Hire people that fit each and every position and invest in a true training department to teach and train the employees properly. I believe if you ran a cost analysis this way would prove to be more cost efficient and effective long term.

I have been working at Covance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Decent Benefits. Coworkers are great. If your supervisor finds out that you're looking at other jobs within the company, some will go out of their way to help.

    Cons

No more bonuses. Since they were purchased by LabCorp the benefits have gotten much worse. Micro-managed beyond belief. Some supervisors will play favorites and it's very obvious. Expectations are set by clients who have little to no experience actually doing the work that is being performed.

    Pros

Booming business, interesting work, growth opportunities abound.

    Cons

Horrible management at the line level, project management is broken and has terrible leadership, new and promising CEO.

    Advice to Management

Lead from a place of respect and you'll deliver messages much more effectively. Upper management: Put in place leaders who are knowledgeable on the work the people they manage do--it will go a long way.

    Pros

Easy to get hired. Decent benefits.

    Cons

Went from RN clinical support to secretarial phone answering and call forwarding for 8 straight hours. Management ridiculous in the eye of anyone who has worked longer than a year...ineffective, bold without reason, totally sold on themselves without accompanying talent or experience. Codeword: Corporate. Corporate. Corporate.

    Advice to Management

Grow up. Your conduct does not go unnoticed by those you oversee. if you want their respect you will have to actually earn it.
