I worked at Covance as a contractor

    Pros

None to speak of really. Food was ok

    Cons

Dishonesty and incompetence is rife. In one instance the payment for a trial was misadvertised to be 400 hundred pounds higher than it was supposed to be. Communication is especially poor and there is no regard for the well being of the volunteers. Volunteers are asked to alter their lifestyle significantly only for the company to discard them as participants without any compensation. Overall I think the staff have a poor attitude towards volunteers in general and I'm sure this will cause them problems in the future.

    Advice to Management

Consider changing how you do things

I have been working at Covance full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Most people are lovely to work with

    Cons

    High staff turnover
Rushed training (for some elements of the job)
    Understaffed
    Pressured environment
No proper career structure- unclear why some people are paid more and are higher than others even with the same level of experience. Difficult to progress.

    Advice to Management

Pay graduates equally, have a proper training scheme for new starters, do not give new starters supervisors who are based in a different country.

    I worked at Covance full-time

    Pros

Huge company, some staff members are great and genuinely nice to work with, strong funding, great staff perks!

    Cons

Strong bullying culture. One of the older female doctors is notorious for doing this and I saw her speaking to even volunteers as well as some student nurses in a disgusting way, but I mentioned it to management informally and NOTHING was done. I suspect it is because she's been with the company for many years. Cliquey nurses (especially some of the younger ones - there is too much of a schoolground atmosphere about things that should be taken seriously, especially when multiple trials are taking place with many volunteers in residence).

Sometimes I have been concerned about mis placed paperwork and so on and been completely ignored because I am not part of the "in crowd." Made me concerned for patient safety but could do nothing. As a nurse you expect the busy times but this is why I left!

    Advice to Management

Stamp out bullying. Just because certain staff members have been with Covance for years doesn't make it OK for them to speak badly to nurses or occasionally volunteers. Some staff retraining and firm workplace rules on bullying would not go amiss!!

Also, the company needs to handle paperwork a LOT better - we have patient safety on the line because we are conducting trials, it's not OK to be messing up GP reports and so on.

I have been working at Covance full-time

    Pros

Can request days off in the week for appointments etc, just have to work the weekend. Can learn some skills in clinic

    Cons

Awful management, bullying culture within the workplace that is not addressed by management, actually seems to be encouraged (one of the main culprits actually encouraged by management to apply for a supervisor job!!). Awful pay compared to average, ridiculous working hours, either rushed off feet and completely understaffed or boring as hell. Would actively encourage people to not join.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Awesome environment.
    Everyone offers you help.
    You Learn a lot.

    Cons

Training can be boring and long.
May find yourself doing some work that make you feel not important.

    Advice to Management

At the moment, I think it would be better to focus on training methods. Also making sure that someone is trained for that specific job role is important.

    Pros

Get to meet lots of different people everyday due to working on the volunteers.
Every day is different- can be working on different studies, the nurses station, the volunteer entrance, or qcing data.
Has a kitchen and cafeteria which serves hot food every day, plus free hot drinks!
Shift work- tend to finish early around 3pm.
Pay for taxis if you rely on public transport and you have an early or late shift.

    Cons

Working on a bank contract can be very unpredictable- you may be doing 50 hours a week or just 3 hours.
Days can be long- may be required to work 12 hour shifts.
Shifts usually start at 7am (or earlier).
Hard to move up in this role- unless someone leaves from a higher department.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great training, very interesting work, the company culture is very focused on quality (quite rightly), everybody knows their role. Constantly striving to improve. I loved my job at Covance. Most of the people are nice, but there are some toxic colleagues, who should be avoided.

    Cons

Less room to try something new, a real lack of career progression. Seriously under-trained line managers often with poor interpersonal skills and issues of their own, creating an an evironment of favouritism and crass decision-making. Some colleagues do not seem to have a handle on quality, but they are carried by their colleagues who are. The promotion criteria seem arbitrary to most people, including those promoted!

    Advice to Management

Consider giving your staff who turn out high-quality work - consistently - a better salary, rather than giving others a raise just because they did something 'more' than their job. If they weren't doing their original job to high quality standards, why are they getting a raise if they are joing more, but badly?
