I have been working at Covance full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Level of expertise, diversity and work ethics of employees is outstanding. It is great to work in a challenging environment

    Cons

Shortage of qualified techs available for hire is making workload a bit challenging while searching for employees.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The schedule isn't as strict for an Associate as it is for a Specialist.

    Cons

They overwork you as an Associate - you are the go to person for the specialist beneath you when they have questions, as well as the go to person when the Program Manager needs something. You're responsible for assigning everyone's work and making sure the phone's are covered while working on your own reports and daily work. They promote people based on favoritism so you are working for people who don't know what they are doing causing even more stress.

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting people based on favoritism. Use a staffing agency that provides better quality temporary staff.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Some of the most dedicated and hard working individuals I have ever worked with. The study teams do everything they possibly can to deliver the their projects on time despite severe resource constraints.

    Cons

There is often a divergence of guidance as it pertains to study deliverables, client satisfaction and internal financial management.
Beware of the LabCorp non-compete unless you want to stay at Covance for the remainder of your career.

    Advice to Management

Pharmaceutical professionals (CRO) have very different skill set and career opportunities then the previous LabCorp business model. Benefits and compensation should be regarded in a much more competitive environment. The more you force LabCorp values and benefits to Covance employees the more current employees you will lose and the less talent you will attract.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Somewhat flexible schedule. great pto. The other technicians are the best group of people you could possibly work with

    Cons

Poor pay. Terrible management. Awful insurance. On call over nights, weekends, holidays. After a few years of working there, and being only 30 years old. I now have arthritis in my hands.

    Advice to Management

Start treating your technicians as people, not machines.

I worked at Covance full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

21 days of PTO, Incentive Shifts, option for overtime, and sometimes meeting people your age with similar interests and education experience. The younger staff is furthermore very friendly. It's not a desk job, so you'll be able to get more steps in for the day. You can wear any scrub color or print of your choice. It also looks great on a resume.

    Cons

-Monotonous tasks that make you feel brain dead after a while. The job is not mentally challenging at all.
-Micromanagement and lack of competence from supervisors. Supervisors will pressure you to work a holiday or stay later, for example. They'll also pull up a policy that doesn't exist in order to exert their power. Overall, management can be pretty shady and condescending.
-Very low pay for the qualifications and stress required for the job.
-Hours are sporadic. You may have to work until 3am on a Friday, then come in at 6am the following Monday.
    -Every third weekend work requirement.
-Disrespectful treatment towards technicians by the older nurses and other staff. They will make you feel stupid and inapt for being a "Tech." Many nurses come there from nursing homes, where they often with with CNAs. So they'll sometimes treat the technicians like they are their assistants, not realizing that it's a whole different field.
-Lack of job growth within the unit, even though growth is emphasized in the interview. The new director likes to hire new grads from the outside for coordinator and upper level positions, ignoring people with equal or better degrees who have been there for >1 year.
-Scrubs as a requirement. This could be a plus if you like scrubs. But one thing is for sure - they're expensive, and you'll need to buy about 5 pairs.
    - "Us vs them" atmosphere between desk job workers and floor staff, which may invite exploitation.
Just a general note: It seems like the unit preys on recent science graduates. Recent grads will naïvely take the job, not realizing their worth, and stick around a year or so before wising up and moving on.

Bottom Line- If you can handle the mess that is the CRU for a bit, it's a good first job or ”stepping stone” job to slap on your resume. But that's about it.

    Advice to Management

Stop micromanaging. Pay workers with a bachelors at least twenty/hour if you want staff retention. Fix scheduling and staffing nonsense. Don't promise job growth when it's virtually nonexistent.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits. Great co-workers and manager.

    Cons

Heavy workload with not enough staff to manage it. New staff training needs to be more detailed, and supervised for a longer period of time. Needs updated or new types of software to improve efficiencies.

    Advice to Management

Reread "cons." Invest in your employees as they are your future to success!!

If you love over time. There is lots of it.

    Cons

No work life balance. Supervisor behavior is that of a middle school click. What a joke.

    Advice to Management

Get fid of supervisors in many of the departments and start over. Too much management and not enough workers. This is coming from someone who spent 10 plus years with the company.
