    I worked at Covance full-time

    Pros

Huge company, some staff members are great and genuinely nice to work with, strong funding, great staff perks!

    Cons

Strong bullying culture. One of the older female doctors is notorious for doing this and I saw her speaking to even volunteers as well as some student nurses in a disgusting way, but I mentioned it to management informally and NOTHING was done. I suspect it is because she's been with the company for many years. Cliquey nurses (especially some of the younger ones - there is too much of a schoolground atmosphere about things that should be taken seriously, especially when multiple trials are taking place with many volunteers in residence).

Sometimes I have been concerned about mis placed paperwork and so on and been completely ignored because I am not part of the "in crowd." Made me concerned for patient safety but could do nothing. As a nurse you expect the busy times but this is why I left!

    Advice to Management

Stamp out bullying. Just because certain staff members have been with Covance for years doesn't make it OK for them to speak badly to nurses or occasionally volunteers. Some staff retraining and firm workplace rules on bullying would not go amiss!!

Also, the company needs to handle paperwork a LOT better - we have patient safety on the line because we are conducting trials, it's not OK to be messing up GP reports and so on.

I have been working at Covance full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Location of the office is convenient. Used to have management that listened to overworked staff and rewarded innovation.

    Cons

There is a payrise, promotion and headcount freeze company wide. Managers expecting unpaid overtime to cover workload. Morale is at all time low.

    Advice to Management

Reward your staff and listen to their concerns or they will leave. Small departments can't afford to lose anyone without impacting client deliverables more than they already are.

    I worked at Covance full-time

    Pros

Good initial training program. I worked in the Clinical department for two years. It is an International company with top pharmaceutical companies as clients and most of the studies carried out there are international clinical trials.

    Cons

As any other big CRO the company is very hierarchical, it is not easy to get a promotion even as a result of good work, so it takes years to move to a CRA I position to CRA II and much more difficult to be promoted to a senior, project management or line management position. This is one of the main reasons for the turning over the company suffers. The salaries are not on the average, smaller salaries for the high qualify jobs.

    Advice to Management

Praise good employees and take into account employees advice and expertise.

I have been working at Covance full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The people are some of the hardest working people I've ever met and the dedication to make things work was inspiring when I first joined.

    Cons

Like any CRO, long hours and never enough staff, but since we were acquired the dynamics have changed and the goodwill of the staff has declined due to downward pressure to satisfy shareholders rather than investing to address the critical needs to keep the business operational - resource, technology, compensation. Business targets now outweigh staff development, opportunity and investment, and the staff are suffering for it.

    Advice to Management

There is a lot of talk about 'the people' and how important they are - maybe less talking and more listening is needed.

I have been working at Covance full-time

    Pros

Can request days off in the week for appointments etc, just have to work the weekend. Can learn some skills in clinic

    Cons

Awful management, bullying culture within the workplace that is not addressed by management, actually seems to be encouraged (one of the main culprits actually encouraged by management to apply for a supervisor job!!). Awful pay compared to average, ridiculous working hours, either rushed off feet and completely understaffed or boring as hell. Would actively encourage people to not join.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your operational areas in regards to scheduling-they know how to do the job to a high quality.
