    I worked at Covidien

    Pros

At Plainfield Factory Service: excellent medical benefits - variety of problems to work on - which leaves no day boring.

    Cons

I would say, "don't walk away from an opportunity to work there - RUN!" It's a pressure cooker - fed by stress. A lot of workers just disappear - get fired - and are gone in an instant. There is a lot of "micro-management" going on. Along with a variety of problems - there is a TON of problems which no one knows how to solve - except for YOU. And, if you don't solve them, bye-bye. Plan to work 80 hours per... week (and get paid for 40). Just hope you do not get a CAPA assigned to you - you will definitely lose sleep at night, worrying about how to get it off of your back. The working systems there are as finicky as heck - as trying to work on an old, classic British car - think positive ground. Only the old-timers know the systems work - and they are too busy to teach you. Example: there are two completely different inventory systems - one for parts coming in and one for parts going out - that don't talk to each other. Plus, the working environment is not that great - it's a warehouse with concrete flooring with cubicles erected. But, at least classic rock music is piped in through-out the facility. Working at another Medtronic (Covidien) facility where they manufacture is probably better than working at the Plainfield factory service site.

    Advice to Management

Quit micro-managing employees. Quit looking at only the negative parts of their performance (or things that did not get accomplished). Look at what they accomplished instead. Let the employees work instead of having to watch their backs. And don't focus on what other employees report about each other.

I worked at Covidien for less than a year

    Pros

    Good benefits and solid products

    Cons

Large disconnect between levels of the company and people are more focused on themselves then the product or the people they work with.

    Advice to Management

    Unify the teams more

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Site managers were generally very good, focused on achieving good customer outcomes.

    Cons

New people were often promoted quickly, but did not stay in Boulder (or Covidien) for longer than 4 years. That included the Division CEO(s)!

    Advice to Management

The many training and development programs didn't really lead to any tangible opportunities at Covidien. I hope the Shanghai manufacturing facility is in the black- when I visited there in 2009 it was a shell of a factory, after shutting down the Gold rated Watertown, NY facility.

I have been working at Covidien full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Covidien provides opportunity for grow and development.

    Cons

Too much tension, not enough people to do all the work, lack of support.

    Advice to Management

Give us more support and motivate us better. Show us that you care about employees because many of them don't feel like they are the most important aspect of the comapny.

I have been working at Covidien

    Pros

It is a fast growing company with a lot of great technologies and a lot of capital. Since the split from Tyco, money is actually being spent to grow

    Cons

There are a number of people who have been here for decades and do not want change - working with them on projects can be challenging

    Advice to Management

Keep spending money and realize that once the economy recovers you will need to finally correct salaries

I have been working at Covidien

    Pros

The products really make a difference. The people are really dedicated. Opportunities to those willing to work for them. Good Pay and Benefits.

    Cons

Company is practically clueless when it comes to New Product Development. Some departments and managers have communication issues and like to play politics.

    Advice to Management

Dump the Tyco Operations driven legacy and plot a course that suits Covidien post seperation. Invest in the right people, invest in new talent, base the future around competency not control.
