I worked at Covidien as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Great coworkers that were willing to help out in any way. They were helpful when a new employee was hired and would show them the ropes.

    Cons

Management was absent and did not understand the pressure put on the team. There was a lack of training provided to new employees and a big turn over because of that. The team would have to make up for the loss of parts per hour for each new employee that was hired.

    Pros

At Plainfield Factory Service: excellent medical benefits - variety of problems to work on - which leaves no day boring.

    Cons

I would say, "don't walk away from an opportunity to work there - RUN!" It's a pressure cooker - fed by stress. A lot of workers just disappear - get fired - and are gone in an instant. There is a lot of "micro-management" going on. Along with a variety of problems - there is a TON of problems which no one knows how to solve - except for YOU. And, if you don't solve them, bye-bye. Plan to work 80 hours per week (and get paid for 40). Just hope you do not get a CAPA assigned to you - you will definitely lose sleep at night, worrying about how to get it off of your back. The working systems there are as finicky as heck - as trying to work on an old, classic British car - think positive ground. Only the old-timers know the systems work - and they are too busy to teach you. Example: there are two completely different inventory systems - one for parts coming in and one for parts going out - that don't talk to each other. Plus, the working environment is not that great - it's a warehouse with concrete flooring with cubicles erected. But, at least classic rock music is piped in through-out the facility. Working at another Medtronic (Covidien) facility where they manufacture is probably better than working at the Plainfield factory service site.

    Advice to Management

Quit micro-managing employees. Quit looking at only the negative parts of their performance (or things that did not get accomplished). Look at what they accomplished instead. Let the employees work instead of having to watch their backs. And don't focus on what other employees report about each other.

I worked at Covidien full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Growing company, internal moves encouraged, competitive salary and benefits. Nice people, well informed management team who welcomed new ideas and processes.

    Cons

Lot's of uncertainty following Medtronic acquisition. Massive layoffs, employee moral at an all time low. Salary and benefits were 'right sized'.

    Advice to Management

People respect transparency. Be honest when discussing long term vision of the company and specifically in regards to local sites.

I worked at Covidien as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Working for a company that makes a difference in peoples lives. Very smart and friendly co-workers.

    Cons

Apparently since my position took so long to fill, within three months of starting my contract my position was effectively replaced by a new position within the R&D department. My contract was completed (actually extended for six months because of a new deployment) but instead of utilizing the assets they had on hand they found outside help.
Oh well. It would have been nice for the right hand to speak to the left hand once in a while.

I worked at Covidien full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, excellent salary, phenomenal products. Medtronic could only improve upon the negative culture within the Hernia Division.

    Cons

Punitive environment, inexperienced VP's and AVP's with no Device Sales experience, who do not know how to execute upon and see a sales plan through to fruition. Unrealistic quotas which are without fail LATE. Sales reporting was inaccurate and unreliable for years.

    Advice to Management

Deliver results in the same manner you expect the sales team to deliver them - NOT LATE.
