I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good salary. A sense of helping people by working in the medical field.

    Cons

    VERY political. Lots of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Comply with the FDA without adding additional overhead out of fear. Political positioning is rampant, adopt a zero tolerance policy toward people who play politics.

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Used to be a senior software engineer there. Covidien, formerly Tyco Healthcare, is a conglomerate which grew by acquisition. This brings interesting technologies into the mix, but unfortunately doesn't always have the mettle to take it to the market the right way. Pay is decent, work-life balance depends on who you work for. Time-off policies standard.

    Cons

The management many times doesn't believe in the products. Some would see products as just vehicle to advance their careers. This then translates to all engineering department as just something that drags down the expense sheet instead of recognizing that good engineering is what make medical devices safe and sells for years to come. Promotion is hard to get unless you do 150% your normal workload. Working harder... (more hours), not smarter (more output) is rewarded. Also they believe all engineers are interchangable, regardless background and expertise.

    Advice to Management

You guys are getting bought by Medtronic. The merge will probably annihilate your positions. But if not, try to build a better synergy with engineering team, not just the marketing and sales.

I have been working at Covidien

    Pros

Good training opportunites Decent time off Nice facility

    Cons

Senior management at R&MS is a revolving door Decisions are based on Marketing vs Engineering Management seems to think that it is better to buy new technology (through aquiring new companies) than to trust their engineers to develop it Management would prefer to contract out most of the engineering work, leaving the engineers with the boring paperwork tasks

    Advice to Management

Trust your engineers to be competent enough to develop new technology

    I worked at Covidien

    Pros

    1. Small company - less heirachy layers - only Manager/Director 2. Everyone knows what everyone is working on: In bigger companies there is much more territorial boundaries

    Cons

    1. Highly disorganized workplace 2. Rarely does one follow any process 3. Due to lack of resources, corners are cut to meet deadlines: All projects I worked on were already due on the date I transitioned over. In a way you are forced to produce a deliverable, just so that one can checkmark it. Concept of quality is absolutely missing. 4. Every project is a firedrill 5. Company specializes in hiring non degreed... personnel, and the quality is a direct result thereof. Management is more focused on getting the product out of the door, rather than quality...

    Advice to Management

Get organized and stop just talking about it - but then again they have done this for years and years. Due to lack of resources it is the way it is.

I worked at Covidien full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Very Good, Experienced & Technical People. I worked with very good team and manager. Very open culture you can reach out to anyone for anything. Work Environment is good. Good work-life balance. Good opportunities for people from embedded background. Good travelling opportunity. Good exposure as you will get the chance to directly communicate with GBU technical team. HR is really very very good. Very... cooperative & maintaining environment more like a family than a company.

    Cons

Not good for the people from medical imaging background. As a software engineer in medical imaging you will have work more as a system engineer, and most of the time on documentation.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing.
