    Pros

Specifying decorative lighting for customers and helping them choose accessories is fun and rewarding. Clientele are often educated, interesting, sometimes eccentric, and a pleasure to work with. Lighting is a great way to mix the mental stimulation of technical knowledge with the ascetic pleasures involved in artistic design and craftsmanship. It’s inspiring to work around beautiful things.

    Cons

Irrational micro-managers. Paranoia, inconsistency. Frequent lengthy emotion charged reprimands by owners designed to demoralize, induce fear and cover for the sub-standard wages. Frequent ‘write ups’ designed for the express purpose of later dismissal. The salary plus commission format is designed to keep the wage low. This is combined with vague commission structure that is difficult to track. Unrealistic and reactionary employee policy in constant flux. No accommodation allowing sales people to realistically achieve adequate sales targets. Required to clock in with a 3 minute window of error for outside combination inside sales with no overtime allowed. Office personnel are afraid to speak to each other and to the sales people because they might be accused of ‘badmouthing’ the owners.

    Advice to Management

Get psychological help. Learn to trust. Pay employees a living wage and you will prosper honestly - not just hang on by a thread as you are doing now. Employee turn over is costly; affecting not only your bank account but your reputation as well.
