I worked at Cree full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You have full influence over your projects.
When you own something it is yours alone.
    The cafe has good food.

    Cons

The middle management is disconnected from their employees.
There is more workload than can be handled by any one individual. I was a product engineer, a quality engineer, and a process engineer.
No clear expectations for timelines of projects.
Very disorganized and very "cowboy" attitude.
Nobody can take the time to do anything right because there are too many projects.
If you want to be a firefighter this is the place for you. Nothing runs smoothly at all and everyday is figuring out how to stop a catastrophe from occurring. The job is advertised as making process improvements, but is actually preventing the process from blowing up in your face.
This is due to the points above: poor management, "cowboy" culture, and insane work load.
Work life balance is nonexistent. 10-12 hr work days plus nightly conference calls. And if you have any hopes of meeting the unrealistic workload then you will probably be working weekends as well.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees. When they have a complaint listen and try to figure out how you can improve the work experience. Or you will continue the trend of rotating through employees every two years. When you have gone through 7 employees in 4 yrs for a 4 man team, it is time to reconsider the effectiveness of the manager leading the team.

I worked at Cree full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Recent culture as an up-and-comer, disrupting a stalwart industry through aggressiveness and innovation.

    Cons

Past "cowboy culture", while resulting in "hyper growth" for several years, involved ragged attention to quality, process, and culture, which has now caught up to Cree. Throughout 2016 and through at least mid-2017, the company is facing significant revenue headwinds and new competitive pressures that are resulting in major share loss. As a result, the company has repeatedly downsized its workforce and is layering management with outsides who will change the culture from innovation to bureaucracy. High turnover, high burnout environment these days.

    Advice to Management

Cree has several very challenging years ahead of them.

I worked at Cree full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working level employees trying to make best of what is managed.

    Cons

    - Departure of CEO is a start and long way to go with middle management.
    - Most dis-functional engineering organization engaged with in over 20+ years. Budgets, schedules, commitments are fluid at best.
    - Revolving door for employees.

    Advice to Management

Pioneers still managing a business that now needs farmers to optimize operation/investment for new competitive era.

    Pros

Met some amazing co-workers and plan to stay friends with them.

    Cons

Too many VP's and not enough people doing the actual work

    Advice to Management

Instead of cutting all of the people that are doing the real work every time there is a "budget cut", think about letting go of some of the VP's with the inflated salaries

    Pros

Great facilities, gym and cafe. Some employee are great to work with and looks out for you. Great entry level opportunity.

    Cons

Employees are not important, high turn over rate. Back stabbing management with employees. Little to no promotion, HR is only used as a tool a means to an end for employees. Would not recommend.

    Advice to Management

Treat employees better, fair and equal to one another.
Do not let the color of one skin. Or the background from which their from determine how their treated among their fellow staff members.

    -Great people to work with
    -Good technology
    -Decent Pay
-Work/Life balance not bad depending on manager/department

    Cons

    -Absolutely NO career growth
    -Good ole' boy network
-Cree prefers to hire external managers rather than promote from within
-When company struggles it is felt on line level employees rather than management
    -Flip Flop decision making
-Not catching up to competitive market
    -Do not value employee viewpoint

    Advice to Management

Get out of the 80s-90s and modernize workforce, processes and employee viewpoint.

    Pros

Have had the opportunity to work in lots of different jobs and move up in my 6 years there. Lots of high quality co-workers. Great benefits.

    Cons

Long hours. You have to work for the right manager to be recognized for your hard work.

    Advice to Management

Company needs to invest in IT to provide staff with the tools they need to do their job more successfully.

I have been working at Cree full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Onsite gym, nice cafeteria, some really good people.

    Cons

Lack of leadership, incompetent managers and still operates as a "good ole boy network". Good designs but unable to control manufacturing process.

    Advice to Management

First level management and individual contributors should be listened to as they see the issues first hand. Senior management does not want to hear it as they know it all! Very poor senior management from the director level up.

I have been working at Cree full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

They have decent insurance thats it.

    Cons

Over worked under paid compared to similar positions in the area. Terrible work life balance due to the end of every quarter u end up having generally 3 days off in the entire month and working fr 14 days straight the last week of the quarter into the first week of the next quarter then they end up giving you have a week off the week after that so all that extra money you got from the over time you have to save up or ull be broke from having half a week off work. Management at all levels minus one or 2 of them are incompetent and willing to fire people for literally anything even if you weren't involved in the situation if you have worked there for any legnth of time be worried for your job because Cree doesn't want to pay you all those raises you've earned over the years and will find any excuse to let you go.

    Advice to Management

Get a clue you over work your people while treating them like garbage when the management is the worst part of the whole place. It was run much better under Al Ruud.
