I worked at Critical Mass full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

A very laid back atmosphere and work environment. Good employee perks, typical to most marketing and digital agencies. Some great people work here. Or have worked here and left.

    Cons

Upper management is super cliquish but mostly non-existent. Company culture motto is a just sound bite. Some of the support departments in Chi and Canada are a total amateur hour. Calgary runs the show.

    Advice to Management

Ask yourselves what the real reason is people stay less than a year.

I have been working at Critical Mass full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Cross office sharing of ideas between US, CA, Europe, SA

    Cons

Long hours (that's a given in this industry); top leadership gives little to no support; talent is lacking; CM is definitely a revolving door place and typically loses people every 6-8 months.
Don't believe it if you think Canadians are laid back and cool to work with...not so. Hurts CM somewhat with credibility to have HQ in Calgary. Most of the talented, experienced staff has already left.

    Advice to Management

There is zero culture here, and the constant turnover hurts everyone. Work-life balance doesn't exist and not even sure how to change that since people don't stay.

    Smart people
Fun add bonus like holiday presents and monthly bonus structure

    Cons

    Wishy washy upper management
    Slow to promote
Quality of hires vary, especially on pm front

    Advice to Management

Tighten this up to help with morale and line of sight to company vision

    Pros

Work/life balance, smaller office, reasonable compensation

I have been working at Critical Mass full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    - Management promotes from within
    - Fair salary and benefits
    - Casual environment
    - Execs have an open-door policy and know you by name
    - Strong office and company culture
    - Good work/life balance for an agency

    Cons

    - Clique-ish, gossipy -- we're all back in high school again. While the culture is strong, it's not for everyone if you want some level of maturity in your work day
    - Most accounts are not very interesting and offer little professional growth
    - Lots of turnover

    Advice to Management

Look at ways to bring in more interesting clients with diverse work--this will allow employees to build on their skills and possibly keep them longer. No one wants to work on insurance accounts for the long haul.

    Cons

    Pros

CM will push the "fun" to mask the problems it's having. So if you like beer, come here.

    Cons

They take advantage of hard working employees and do not compensate...well, until they let a few more people go, then you may get a raise. Not a secure place to work! They seem nice at first, but watch out, it's a ploy to get you in the door!

    Advice to Management

CM needs to pull away from the click it has in upper management. No matter what good you do, if they don't like you, or if their friends don't like you. you will be let go/fired. You have been warned!

    Pros

Culture is key. Fosters a sense of family among employees.

    Cons

Omnicom ownership has changed the focus from the people to the bottom line. Their continued push for margins have decreased career support and professional development.

I worked at Critical Mass full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    - Incredibly fun culture and the people are great. There are benefits to working hard with these guys.
    - Potential to work on some really cool projects for brands people recognize.

    Cons

    - Pay is great for people out of college and hungry. Those who've been around for a while can get paid better elsewhere.
    - Losing swagger, partly due to client roster fading over the years and burned out employees.
    - Home office doesn't know how to operate outside their geographical space, making expansion and sharing of great opportunities messy and poorly strategized.
