I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Lots of variety and work, great intern program that allows college students to get their foot in the door.

    Cons

Management and team structure are not conducive to success. The manager I worked with was a micromanager and played favorites. The performance management is a little bit off. What I mean by that is all of the managers, even ones that you don't interact with or work with, all talk about your performance and determine your annual rating. This isn't fair, and is quite gossipy. I also had to work a lot of overtime, without any choice. They also need to develop a consistent deployment process. Please focus on your development teams and making sure all products have adequate resources and upper management isn't over-promising. QA also needs to be a standard and not an exception.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    1. Higher salary - but not if you break it down to hourly rates.
    2. Looks decent on a job resume, but definitely not as good as Big 4, so if you can get hired by Big 4, don't waste your time on Crowe.
    3. Work life balance is better than at the Big 4.

    Cons

    1. Once someone makes partner, they are basically allowed to say or do whatever they want, with no regard for policy or decency. Really immoral behavior by practice leaders in some groups is the norm.
    2. I heard several partners talk about how the "pyramid" model of partnership was currently failing because there were not enough people interested in becoming partner to pay out the partners trying to retire. Instead of fixing this, they just started promoting (aka allowing people to buy in) people to partner that were absolutely not qualified.

    Advice to Management

    1. Get realistic about the future of the company.
    2. If a partner does something really bad or treats people really poorly, get rid of them.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Flexible vacation time (3-4 weeks)
Decent pay ($60k, staff level w/cpa)

    Cons

At first glance, Crowe appears to have a culture of care. The people are outwardly friendly, willing to approach and provide small talk but when it comes down to it, however, this is all a mask. The management team backstabs each individual behind closed doors. This company is an example of micromanaging at it's finest, making it toxic to its employees and overall working environment. The company lacks vision, and becomes caught up in the juvenile politics making efficiency a foreign concept. The performance managers and the supervising team fail to confront you with constructive criticism, but rather through cowardly playground antics. Do not work here if you want to be valued for your skill rather than using you as a puzzle piece in their game of simon-says. To be successful at Crowe, you have no choice but to be a yes-man and play their games. Pay close attention to the company culture and beware of the false smiles and promises.

    Advice to Management

    Stop micromanaging everyone
    Discard the insincere conversations/smiles
Value more independent thought than robotic work
Reward skill over tenure on the job

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It pays the bills though the salary is not competitive with the Big 4. Light work load. Not very demanding. Easy to look good if "you have brains in your head and shoes on your feet". You can take your vacation almost without question. Staying past 5 is an exception. Use a couple years of audit experience to prep for the CPA and move on.

    Cons

Study the history. Its Crowe Chizek, a small city, office centric, passive aggressive culture that began in South Bend not London. The second office was where??? As far from a meritocracy as you can get. You will serve time in grade. An aggressive personality does not fit in and you will know it. You wont learn much (think small town accounting firm) and you wont have a mentor or role model. Very little opportunity for foreign assignments. They are pack followers and not leaders. Doesn't buy you anything on a resume.

    Advice to Management

Its time for your periodic house cleaning. Why not set an example of paying for performance and raise the bar. The staff does not aspire for the Partnership and the carrot and stick is not existent. Change the culture to something to be proud of and one where recruiters don't ask "Crowe who?". Exit IT consulting since you compete on rates and are not a market leader. Put your emphasis Audit, Tax and Assurance. Your are going to need an outsider in the lead role to shake this place up out of the 50's.

I worked at Crowe Horwath full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great firm to work for out of college.
Excellent support resources and an open work environment.

    Cons

Work-life balance is not as flexible as marketed.
Poor collaboration amoung managers limited efficiency, resulting in longer work hours.

    Advice to Management

Crowe is struggling to redefine their national image as a large national accounting firm, while at the same time claiming to maintain their small firm values. Management needs to communicate a clearer image / firm mission, in order to let their employees and clients know with whom they are working. Perhaps this will reduce the high turnover experienced amoung the staff and senior staff levels. I believe Crowe will continue to grow, but it is hard to tell what they will ultimately become.
