    Positive Outlook

I worked at Cuesta College full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Cuesta College is the most pleasant place for which I have ever worked. Interacting with the staff, students, and faculty made for a wonderful work culture. The employees there really enjoy their job and each other, and it shows! They foster a tight-knit community and show appreciation for top employees and faculty at their award ceremonies.

    Cons

Cuesta College likes to thoroughly vet candidates before they become permanent employees, so if you start as an hourly employee and are trying to get a permanent position, expect that you might have to interview for multiple positions before securing one.

    Advice to Management

The managers at Cuesta are very effective, and I was impressed with the level of efficiency and organization there.

    Pros

Great co-workers. Beautiful area to work.

    Cons

Low student enrollment. So you are not always guaranteed a class.

I have been working at Cuesta College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great Management and staff

    Cons

The typical Educational politics found at the community college level, but admittedly less than observed at other colleges in the state

I have been working at Cuesta College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Friendly staffers, laid back environment, great location, a lot of entry-level jobs, wide range of employment options for high school students to adults

    Cons

No salary surveys done for current positions, little room to move up, too much inbreeding, way behind in technology, very resistant to change.

    Advice to Management

Upgrade your employee's systems, add wireless, provide professional development, more community building activities

I worked at Cuesta College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The faculty at Cuesta are amazing and dedicated professionals. They work hard to make sure students' needs are met and that they are up-to-date in their respective fields.

Salary is OK for an adjunct position.

    Cons

Management was much more worried about bottom line than education. Several times they mentioned that money was the issue to the college, neglecting the fact that opening more classes would have attracted more students, more tuition, and more state help.

    Advice to Management

Remember the goal of the college is to educate students and serve the community. Trust the faculty who are in the classroom. They know much more about what the school needs.

I worked at Cuesta College part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Favorable impression of area, facility, students.

    Cons

Program requirements kept changing, little input from part-time faculty who staffed it.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to student reviews of instructor.

    Pros

Cuesta College is a great place to work due to it's location and the community. There is strong community support for the college. The San Luis Obispo area is gorgeous!

    Cons

Problems with hiring a good president and executive VPs. The president seems to have too much power and makes decisions independent of input from the lower downs.

    Advice to Management

Hire a good president. You have one in house....don't pass up the opportunity.

I worked at Cuesta College part-time

    Pros

Generally not too much work for a teachers assistant. Gave plenty of time to pursue other interests.

    Cons

Grading students work can sometimes be confusing. While some students clearly understand the material, others struggle which makes the partial credit decisions difficult as a grader.

I have been working at Cuesta College full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The campus is attractive. You can usually find parking if you are staff. Flexible work schedule, at least in my department.

    Cons

Nasty coworker who deals with students known far and wide for her miserable attitude kept on by supervisors for reasons unknown. People in other departments rude to you if you work in a different department, as if we were not all coworkers. Worst family medical insurance I have ever had in 25 years of working for similar institutions - unaffordable, had to drop my child from the work insurance and put her on private insurance. Went broke and bankrupt in this expensive area because salary is reduced by 1/3 for health insurance that has high copays and keeps medical bills coming even with insurance in place. And Cuesta College cares nothing for retaining staff. They know someone else will take your place if they lose you.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your staff members and their families so no one else has to write a review like this.
