    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Excellent team to work with. Able to help a very diverse population. Always on the go in either home visits, court, or community partnerships. Never stuck in the office.

    Cons

Leadership from the top down is very political and do not seem to care about the social workers or the care they need to get the job done. Overwhelming amount of cases given and not the state norm. Supervisors (not all) have their own agenda and will let you fly in the wind rather than help you get your job done.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees and stop undermining them!

    Neutral Outlook

I worked at Cumberland County Department of Social Services full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The employees give their all, because they truly care about helping people. That is the only reason they deal with the bombarding amount of rules. Helping those that help themselves can be a rewarding job.

    Cons

Top heavy management...Everybody wants to bark orders and no progress is made. Meetings to discuss meetings. The quarterly employee meetings are extremely negative and seldom highlight positive efforts of employees. The only difference in half the staff from the dss clients is the desk. Only managers have seen 7-10% raises, while the 559 other employees make do with crumbs. The workloads are extremely heavy and understaffed is the norm.

    Advice to Management

Be more positive and supportive of staff and you may see the results, you seek. The verbal abusive meetings do not help. Acknowledge the positive sometime and stop rewarding pettiness!

  7. "Worse place to work"

    StarStarStarStarStar
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee
    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

    Health benefits and employee clinic

    Cons

Being forced to work overtime without pay, horrible management, experiencing work place harassment by upper management, really no room for growth. .

    Advice to Management

There needs to be new management. Out with the old and in with the new.
