I have been working at Cummins as an intern

    Pros

I have completed two summer internships at Cummins in the Fuel Systems organization. My first summer internship was in Reliability and current internship is in Current Product Engineering. I have met a lot of other interns and full-time employees and here is my general overview of the company:

-You're experience at Cummins depends on which manager you get assigned!
-I had a great experience with meaningful engineering projects to work on during my two summer internships.
-The engineering internship pay is top-notch and one of the highest in the automotive industry.
    -Great Culture with high diversity

    Cons

    - My roommates had an awful experience because of the manager they were assigned
-They had no work plan assigned to them, spending weeks stuck in a cubicle watching Cummins training videos.
-HR is very far removed from Engineers
-Typically have layoffs every 3-5 years
-Location is not Ideal for some people

    Advice to Management

Be prepared to have good meaningful projects for Interns when they arrive!

    Pros

Interesting projects, abundant responsibilities, lots of learning opportunities.

    Cons

Too many rewards and too much emphasis on management, too little focus on technical competence and insufficient rewards for technical leadership.

    Advice to Management

Don't suddenly fire/retire 75% of your senior technical leaders and think you are building for the future.

I have been working at Cummins full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Cummis is a strong company with good benefits. Their vision and mission are top notch. Improve the communities we live and work in, while delivering world class products and services.

    Cons

Many office hourly employees take these entry level roles to get their foot in the door, with the hopes of moving up to an exempt role. Some are over-qualified for these administrative roles. Also, there is a stigma that hourly office employees have at Cummins. This makes it difficult to move into an exempt role.

    Advice to Management

Take value in hourly entry level employees. See what skill sets they possess. Consider the savings and value of promoting them because of the knowledge they have gained in their role.
