I worked at Cummins as a contractor (Less than a year)

    Pros

If you are ready to work hard and produce actual results this is a great place to work

    Cons

Some folks will have a problem that this is such a heavily outsourced company. It can cause conflict when different functions are outsourced to different companies and that adds a bit of tension sometimes.

I worked at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

They give projects that have meaning and value. They allow you to own those projects and to take control of how they will end up, while still being there to help you if you need it. People are very willing to meet with you for your projects. You are looked at as another Cummins employee. Being an intern doesn't have a bad connotation to it. People are happy that you're there and to see that you are doing the work that you are doing.

    Cons

Columbus, IN is a small town. There isn't much to do in the town itself. However, it's surrounded by fun locations to visit (Indy, Louisville, Bloomington).

    Advice to Management

Make sure that project work is consistent among all interns in the function. I know some HR interns who had 1-2 projects and others who had 5-6.

I have been working at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Diversity, Culture, People, Views, Values, Mission, Vision. These are all pros and everyone here is incredibly helpful. They go out of their way to make sure you feel welcome, which is very nice.

    Cons

Many of the job descriptions sound the same and it is hard knowing what you are actually applying for or getting yourself into, but this may be the case throughout the corporate world.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the good work and thanks for all of the wonderful events you have put on for us in order to grow, learn, and develop!

    Pros

Great place to work. Allows you to move around cross-functionally to get experience in other departments. All the employees are helpful and kind. They have a great internship program.

    Cons

Did not let the interns choose the department they want to work in.

    Advice to Management

Can try to give interns a choice to choose between departments to start with.

I worked at Cummins as an intern

    Pros

Very intern friendly. Worked with a good team. Had a great time all summer. Definitely a positive experience. Would come back full time.

    Cons

Columbus, Indiana is small for some people, especially those coming form larger cities. It is however, close to Louisville and Indianapolis.

    Advice to Management

Nothing negative to say. Enjoyed the experience and tasks I was asked to perform. Enjoyed the weekly meetings with my manager.

I worked at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

    1. Platform to work with one of the biggest supply chain and operations in the country
    2. Freedom to take your own steps during the projects
    3. Freedom to take multiple projects, in different areas, which helps an intern to explore his/her interests.
    4. Business leaders address the interns and share their own experiences, which makes you feel a part of the Cummins family.
    5. Excellent support for the interns to be effective during their internship and complete their projects.
    6. Relevant projects are given.

    Cons

    1. Experience vary with locations. For ex - experience as an intern will not be the same in Columbus and Memphis. Reasons can be due to HR, intern activities etc.
    2. Full time employment confirmation might take a long time.

    Advice to Management

Expedite the conversion to full time process.
Uniformity in HR roles and how they handle interns. Memphis MDC HR was not so supportive and hence it made interns not feel like coming back after the internship period.

I have been working at Cummins as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

The Community at Cummins is amazing. They hire the best people. This benefit of that for an intern is that literally anybody in any position is happy to talk with you and help you. The work is also great, because as an intern they give you actual meaningful work to do.

    Cons

Depending on where you work, some teams are more inviting than others. Last summer, I worked on a High Horsepower Software team and did not receive a lot of work and everyone on the team was spread around and kind of engulfed in the work they did. This summer I worked in a lab instead of a cubicle, and this fostered a better team environment in my opinion. It was much easier to speak to the team for help when they are right there next to you.
Also, not a lot of Millennials like living in Columbus IN. I believe this is due to the lack of night life that exists in Columbus, and since this is not my thing, that is fine to me. I actually quite liked living in Columbus.

    Advice to Management

Please be more careful with sending interns emails. At the end of most to all internships there is an end of internship presentation. I almost missed this meeting time because the email was not sent to me or my manager (and probably not his manager either). This could have severely hindered the review of my internship for future job offers. The only thing that finally got me the information was my badgering of the HR department.

    Cons
