Still the best company to work for
Jan 30, 2016 - Digital Artist in Reno, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
As an adult coming from the mean world of work I have to say that the team environment at Customink is amazing. I don't wake up and dread going to work. Work/Life balance is easy to achieve over here. Benefits for us include outstanding low rates and lots of perks. Food available all the time (no charge for a lot of it) and catered 2x a week. If you work hard your able to over earn on your bonus and there are lots of opportunities for growth. I appreciate everyday what an amazing company I work for.
Cons
Pay could be better, but its a balance. I could make more elsewhere but not be happy in my life. Required OT is at least paid but still required. There will always be negative Nancy types but the good outweighs any of the bad.

Software Engineer Intern
Nov 18, 2016 - Software Engineer in Fairfax, VARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
CustomInk is a great place if you want to get into web development for a real business. Here's my experience as a software developer intern (other job roles may vary): + They use a lot of Ruby on Rails and for the most part stick to the best practices. Their codebase is well kept and high code quality is a core part of their workflows. This is good, because as someone joining the team you won't have to deal with technical debt as much as at some other places. They are also pretty generous about learning on the job. + The team is great to work with - managers included. There's room to socialize, room to talk about cool tech, or room to be alone and work - up to you. At the end of the day everyone is very collaborative and passionate about the work itself. + Excellent work life balance. This is just my experience, but, I never saw anyone taking 10hour days or anything like that. Everyone from managers, developers, interns, etc, all had a solid 8 hour day and rarely chatted or responded to emails outside work hours - which is good. + Cool product. At the end of the day, you're helping bring some custom design to life, either on a shirt, hat, sweater, or whatever - and real people wear those. That's something to be happy to say you work for. + Perks like catered lunch once a week, company outings, snacks, remote work if you need to, etc. I would recommend a position here to anyone that wants to apply as a software developer (especially if you have Rails experience).
Cons
For the most part, there aren't that many cons or at least none that don't also apply to basically all other software jobs. Probably the biggest one (in my personal experience, which could be a lot different than another developer's) is that some projects / tickets are more exciting than others so that might influence how excited you are to come into work some weeks. Also, it is a well established company, and while there are still opportunities to take ownership of some part of the site, for the most part much of what you'll be working on has already been decided by management or UX or whoever calls the shots.

Best Place I Have Ever Worked
Feb 14, 2019 - Satisfaction Assurance in Reno, NVRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
The benefits offered are amazing. Great health insurance, dental, and maternity leave. Pay is fair for the current market. The atmosphere is really what makes working here so amazing. You become part of a big family!
Cons
The pay is fair for the market but not the best out there. For the amount of care they want us to take the pay could be better. They are generous with PL but should also have 'sick' days on top of the allotted time off. I feel that lumping it all together creates a desire to come in even when sick in order to maintain your PL balance. Work life balance could be better. Sometimes you are asked to change your schedule even if you've had the same one for years.

Pros
- Free snacks - Great benefits - Free lunch - Cool location
Cons
- If you aren't social and don't want to be best friends with coworkers, you won't get anywhere in the company - They constantly talk about a work/life balance then make you work an unimaginable amount of overtime throughout the year - Only time they accept personal leave is if you request it 6+ months in advance or you only plan to take Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday off - They closely track when you clock in/out, how long your lunch is and how much break time you take and constantly talk about being put on an action plan for being a few minutes late or taking a 31 minute lunch - The rivalry between the Fairfax and Reno offices is ridiculous - Employees are treated like children and management can't step up and tell the people who aren't doing their jobs, to do their jobs. Rather they tell the department as a whole to do better because they don't want to hurt anyone's feelings
