I worked at Cyan full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Cyan had incredible leadership of smart, focused, and very transparent executives. I joined at a time prior to the Ciena acquisition and did some very cool work - we launched a new website, an updated brand, expanded communications and demand gen, and I had the opportunity to spend more time with customers than in previous roles.

    Cons

The one challenge I experienced was finding a way to really integrate into the culture. The company was about 50/50 remove vs.on-site. Some of that was my responsibility to determine where to insert myself.

I worked at Cyan full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Petaluma location was convenient. Periodic Bagel and beer gatherings attempt to reinforce a forced close (golfing) culture. Some excellent engineering talent but the misery quotient is very high.

    Cons

Management plays favorites and is always pushing the least experienced to extremes to prove their worth within the organization. Working 60+ hours weekly is minimum and total dedication and passion is required to excel in this competitive minimally compensatory outfit. One can hope that Ciena can get rid of the poisoned management and realize some value for Cyan.

    Advice to Management

Take the retirement package or create a better work environment for your teams! Lead!

I have been working at Cyan full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

None now that Cyan has been acquired by an out-of-touch company. The environment under the acquiring company is dreadful. We're all still searching for the pros.

    Cons

Cyan's now-gone CEO totally blundered the company after our IPO. He burned through every cent raised from the IPO, got himself richer in the process, and then set us up as an acquisition target. Ciena purchased Cyan for a song. Rumor on the street is that our less-than-honest CEO banked over $5 million in the deal. Most of the Cyan employees felt lucky if Ciena didn't involuntarily terminate them. There have been plenty of involuntary terminations. The severance package is a disgrace. No more than two month's pay. Shameful.

    Advice to Management

None. It's too late to save Cyan. Cyan was a great company with a bright future. Our CEO made several horrific moves and burned through our cash like a Lake County wild fire. He's hurt a lot of good people. May he one day encounter his Karma. Good luck with your snake oil at your next stop.
