I have been working at Cymer full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good people, good work environment. The parent company has a great future.

    Cons

This location is slowly becoming a zombie company. From a vibrant and independent company, Cymer/ASML is becoming nothing more than a second thought division with limited growth for business and promotion. This is a good place for entry level positions to a manager level position, but the opportunity is extremely limited after that and you will need to leave this company for further career growth and personal development. There is little business autonomy and all decisions are made by the parent company. There is a huge culture difference between the dutch parent company and the US company, and this difference outweighs new bathrooms, color schemes and pay reductions. People here are disheartened and go through the motions - zombie like.

    Advice to Management

San Diego has a limited future and statements otherwise are known to be false. Prepare for zombie results and zombie employees based on the reality.

  2. "Not a healthy work life balance, management culture of fear and blaming."

    I worked at Cymer full-time

    Pros

Salary and benefits are great, the company is very profitable. Good products, hard working smart people. Good company events.

    Cons

Executives are micromanaged and controlling, not open to facts, they think they already know it all. The management is old school style based on fear.
When the company was bought out by ASML employees expected a change, little change has happened and not fast enough.
There's a blaming culture motivated by fear. The company is not staffed appropriately which leads to overworked people, managers doing a lot of clerical work.

I have been working at Cymer (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    + Good salary
    + Great people (mostly)

The salaries at Cymer are somewhat competitive, and the people you work with are super helpful for the most part.

    Cons

    - No work/life balance
    - The best and brightest (largest contributors) are leaving at an alarming rate. This is generating more work for those that remain as their replacements can't work at the same pace as their predecessors.
    - Most people are stressed and overworked
    - Incompetent management
    - Not enough doers (and too many managers)

It's not uncommon to only spend a few hours with your family every week. Many doing the most work are leaving the company due to frustration caused by the incompetence of their managers. Since there is a frustrating lack of people actually performing tasks or making a real difference at the company, the few capable people are always overloaded. Many managers seem to not have enough to do.

    Advice to Management

You have a lot of managers that are taking their stress out on others. Take a zero tolerance approach to this behavior before it's too late to reverse the damage they are doing. There needs to be more accountability across the entire organization, beginning with how managers manage, and ending with higher standards for competency. As many reviewers have already noted, listen to and value the people in the trenches more. It's all talk no change right now in this respect.

    I worked at Cymer full-time

    Pros

Decent pay/benefits. I liked the sandwiches in the cafeteria, does that count?

    Cons

There are some really talented people, but some pretty incompetent ones as well. I still don't know what a lot of the managers did all day apart from meeting-hopping. There are lots of lifers who are just straggling along in unnecessary positions and there is pushback to improve existing systems that are obviously broken. I was being under-utilized in my role and found myself stagnating.

Two internships and 1.5 years as a full time employee was enough for me. I don't suggest staying there long term as there are not many opportunities to advance.

    Advice to Management

Give good employees a reason to stick around (other than sheer convenience).

Great company to work for prior to it's acquisition by ASML. Management trained and mentored employees for personal growth and enforced team responsibilities.

    Cons

Acquisition caused significant changes in employee relations.
