    Pros

The place has a good work culture. Also the company provides good number of facilities to its employees in terms of training, recreation, etc...

    Cons

The salaries upon joining depend on your previous pay and the company pays too much consideration to academic qualification of the candidate.

    Advice to Management

They need to recruit candidates on the strength of their past work experience apart from their academic qualification and encourage the growth of the employees.

    Pros

Some of the teams work on very good products. Some of the best techniques are used while developing. Lot to learn from the existing code base.

    Cons

Most of the products are now stabilized. So, there is lot of maintenance work. Many of the teams spend more than 70% of their time to support.

    I worked at D. E. Shaw India full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Flexible timings (not applicable to all teams).

    - Smart people to work with.

    - A lot of young and fresh talent.

    - Parties every quarter apart from monthly happy hour and annual party.

    - Well maintained facility with gym and games/sports.

    - Talks by renowned external speakers

    Cons

    - Strictly high command culture. Whatever headquarters says, off shore office needs to follow -- they say they are a global firm but they aren't. When you work with a peer in the US team, you do not get a sense of working with a colleague. They try to upper hand you and overturn or ignore your suggestions/decisions. A lot of the US (technical) staff won't take any feedback and are presumptuous and prejudiced. They pay you well mostly to bear with this frustration.

    - Inter-office transfers (onsite) is really-really far fetched. Do not join if you think you will get a chance to work onsite. This will never happen.

    - When the firm gets top heavy, senior managers are shown doors.

    - There's no scope of growth after a certain extent or if you responsibilities are reduced. This has happened with some talented folks as well. The firm tries to keep its staff mostly fresh.

    Advice to Management

    - Work on onsite opportunities

    - Do something about the folks who want to stick to the firm and are talented.

    I worked at D. E. Shaw India full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great workplace with good work life balance. A diverse and dynamic workforce. A good office culture and relaxed dress code.

    Cons

Lack of transparency in management and existence of hierarchy. Difficult to make transitions within the company and you don't get to decide teams at the time of joining.

    Advice to Management

A strong advice would be to keep the attrition rate in check and would encourage transparency during the hiring process. And to do away with check-pointed promotions.
