I have been working at DC Department of Health full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Although it can be stressful at times its a very relaxed work environment. We are doing great things for the community. It is a feel good job.

    Cons

There are some people who have been working there entirely too long and lack the positive energy you may want to have at the workplace. However, you can avoid them and stick with the nice group.

    Pros

Assisting the constituents of the District of Columbia with their request for a vital record.

    Cons

Management should have to take managerial classes before they are hired as part of the senior management team. If you are not part of the click, and you speak your mind, you have nothing coming and will be terminated at the drop of a hat.

    Advice to Management

Please invest in managerial classes, management does not mean micro-managing.

    Pros

Great vision and opportunity to commit to public service.

    Cons

Too much about who you know and not what you know. Employees strive to improve but management becomes to fearful and set in their way to acknowledge or help current employees advance. Management hires their friends and family members instead of mentoring within the organization.....

    Advice to Management

If you want the best...look at yourselves. Who helped you. Take a secretary and mentor and manage them. Give training opportunities from within. Stop being afraid that they are going to take your jobs. Staff can be a reflection of leadership. So look at yourselves before constantly being critical of others.

    Pros

My supervisor was very hands on and taught me quite a few things. I was introduced and able to meet all the upper management at the DOH. Good resume booster.

    Cons

Sometimes I felt that it was too slow paced. Not sure it's somewhere I would want to work in the future. Often times I was given busy work or work which had a vague purpose.

    Advice to Management

I would advise that management introduces interns to fellow interns so they can feel a sense of camaraderie. Give interns concrete positions that could possibly move into in the fuutre..
