I have been working at DC Public Schools full-time

    Pros

    - Considering the world of low-paying education, DCPS central office pays well - Most employees work incredibly hard and do not mind working longer hours to ensure an excellent product - Generally friendly environment, from coworkers to leadership

    Cons

    - Reorganizations happen every couple years and equate layoffs - Sometimes minds are already made in regards to who will be hired/promoted, but they drag others through the process for optics sake.

I have been working at DC Public Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Pay is respectable. Resources in the classroom are plentiful than most places.

    Cons

Working in a high needs school district, some schools do not receive the same attention or funding. Most of the people in central office do not communicate with people in the schools. People take many days off and it effects the schools in so many ways. Students need to be pushed to do work but some cannot.

Principals are going in without proper preparation. Teachers are not held to high standard. Everyone is just work to do on IMPACT(not there for the kids).

I have been working at DC Public Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The students. They are tough, but many of them have experienced a lot and reflect those experiences. That being said, they will still fill your heart with joy.

    Cons

Your school experience is completely dependent upon the whims of your administration. Central office does not care at all about your experiences. They believe money is the only thing that will matter when retaining teachers. They spend mass amounts of money to investigate teacher retention, when it's as simple as, appreciate your employees, how hard they work, the conditions they work in, and hire administrators that are competent and hold them accountable.

I worked at DC Public Schools full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

    Great money and benefits

    Cons

Little to no support from Central Office. Major curricular changes on a yearly basis for MANY consecutive years. LEAP observations of teachers new in 2016, New teacher evaluation system in 2017, teachers rated by students for 10% of their evaluations new in 2017, teacher planning periods lost to collaborative planning (LEAP mandate) in 2017. Most of these significant changes were not agreed upon by CO and the union producing stress by principals forced to support the above and teachers who had a union that told them they were not required to do collaborative planning etc. This caused varying amounts of conflict and tension at the building levels thus large turnover. Some schools lost 22 staff midyear according to the papers. Major promotions of people not qualified and/or ready to lead in my opinion. This has happened since Kaya Henderson left. Turnover of teachers and principals is larger than other metropolitan school districts due to stress I believe.
