I worked at DC Water full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This is a review for the professional staff. Great salary for not that much work. It's a 9-5 job and no one expects much production out of you. If you're nice and professional, you're immediately in the top 10%.

    Cons

Low staff morale. There's a lot of old people so there's very little room for upward mobility and no one quits or seemingly gets fired so stagnation can happen pretty quickly.

    Advice to Management

Recruit and retain new blood and cycle out low achievers. There isn't any accountability and quality of work is staff dependent.

I have been working at DC Water full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Salaries and benefits are great compared to other government jobs in DC. Independent board. No political appointees. DC Water has a great reputation in the water/wastewater sector thanks to efficient, innovative operations and a highly-visible CEO. Customers generally appreciative even though rates are rising. Employees do good work to benefit the public.

Generally a good place to work if you have a family.

    Cons

Some senior managers have been around a long time and are experts in their fields, helping develop people's careers and improving the state of the industry. Other senior managers have simply been around a long time.

    Labor/management relations are tenuous.

Most administration jobs are at Blue Plains, which can be malodorous and is hard to reach by public transit. This will change in the next 2 years when a new headquarters comes online near the baseball stadium.

    Advice to Management

Develop more opportunities for staff from different parts of the organization to work and learn together. The executive team should go on listening tours.

I have been working at DC Water full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Welcoming atmosphere with very helpful staff (management on down) ~ Great opportunities for growth (enhancing skills in order to transition to other departments and/or positions) ~ Life after work exists (enjoy the time at work and then go home to enjoy your time away)!

    Cons

Having to wait several weeks to receive your first paycheck

    Advice to Management

Notify new staff that their first paycheck may take several weeks to be processed.

I have been working at DC Water full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Creative initiatives, talented General Manager. Pay is more than competitive with market. Great retirement savings program.

    Cons

Unless you live in PG or Alexandria, the location is terrible. The smell at the Blue Plains site is horrific. While I'm told things are changing with the DC Water culture, most employees seem to be unimaginative, and in some cases just going through the motions. One of the most segregated work environments I've seen; very disappointing. Not much room for career growth in many departments. Yearly pay increases are relatively small because some is given as a cash award and won't increase your base pay.

    Advice to Management

Have face to face meetings with staff. Be more transparent. Create a culture where hard work is rewarded. Consider expanding Metro reimbursements because of the location. Make an effort to retain talented people. Seems like all the best people leave rather than get promotions.

I worked at DC Water full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Blue Plains Advance Wastewater Treatment Plant is a great location if you live in DC!
Great company if you are in the Science, Technology, Engineering or Math fields!
Free parking at the Blue Plains Advance Wastewater Treatment Plant location all though there are times when parking spaces become sparse.
Great Benefits, Flex Spending & they match your 401K contributions.

    Cons

    Very Clique-ish & unfriendly personnel.
    Old buildings, not modern.
The Blue Plains location has it's BAD SMELLING days!
Also, there is a lot of Air Pollution due to wastewater treatment and truck emissions on the Plant every day.
Professional training options need to be made available more often.

    Advice to Management

To treat all of their employees equally & fair.
