I worked at DHG full-time for more than a year

    Pros

DHG is a very professional firm that encourages constant education of it's staff. The compensation is comparable to the industry standards. With offices in other states, there is an abundance of information not available to smaller, local firms.

    Cons

There are truly no 'cons' to working with DHG. The partners are knowledgeable and available to the staff as needed.

I worked at DHG full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The people; my team members where great and I learned a lot from them

    Cons

    1. Charge hours/ metrics over emphasized really getting that big 4 feel. 2. No work life balance. If you take off a week for vacation, you have to make up that time to meet your charge hour goal so really it's not time off. 3. Let's talk about charge hours - besides chargeable Work we do there are also required CPEs, trainings and meetings we are all required to attend but those hours and time don't count to the goal...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your people. We aren't happy. And the mass amounts of people that are leaving right now should show you that. I've had a relationship with the firm for 4 years counting internships and full time staff. I've seen the changes happen and seen managers being pushed out. Along with all of the other cons listed that are also happening.

I worked at DHG full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The company really allows you to get experience in a variety of areas including individual tax, federal tax and state and local tax, as well as the opportunity to work with various types of entities. They give you a lot of freedom (no "big brother" watching over you) and allow you to self-manage and really take ownership of your work. The health benefits were good, a lot of options. Plus, the amount of time off was very...

    Cons

Company culture is lacking. There was little communication and camaraderie among the general areas (tax, audit and consulting). The "tone from the top" seemed a little too focused on making money and not on taking care of their employees. The overtime was really draining, which is pretty typical of public accounting firms, but that doesn't make it right. There were almost no incentives for employees either, I rarely heard...

    Advice to Management

Give employees an incentive to go above and beyond, and work on creating a more inclusive culture.

    I worked at DHG full-time

    Pros

Interesting people, challenging work. the office parties can be fun if everyone participates. Free food and drinks, snacks like chips and pretzels. Our office manager was a wonderful person.

    Cons

This is just my personal experience. I worked for this company for right at two years and was overall very satisfied in the beginning. However, management feeds you lies about how if you get promoted the work-life balance will be better. You will breathe, sleep, eat, and drink Dixon Hughes Goodman and you will never have any free time. "But that's public accounting everywhere" they chime. Wrong. The turnover in this firm...

    Advice to Management

Stop being so greedy and stop caring only about the bottom line. I actually had someone tell me "well if we can get a good 3-5 years out of most people then that's all we need." Try harder to retain good talent. Senior management, get out of your ivory tower and actually be involved with the day to day running of the company.

I have been working at DHG full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Okay pay. I worked with some great people including partners (all of whom were there when the firm was just Goodman & Company).

    Cons

Ever since the merger with Dixon Hughes the firm became more and more like a Big Four. Our office worked with other regional offices a lot and since both offices were so different there were too many clashes and politics. Busy season used to be manageable but more recently the expectations for you to be there late were higher. Upper management is also very shady and hard to trust (regional and office managing partners...

    Advice to Management

Figure out what kind of firm you're trying to be and communicate more clear with all staff including partners. Don't offer flex schedules or any other work/life balance benefits if it is only going to get looked down on by upper management.

I worked at DHG full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Loved the "Southern" culture of DHG, and I really liked the people I worked with - associates, managers, partners, support staff - everyone was great. At DHG you can experience the work and have the resources of a Big 4 firm without the Big 4 culture.

    Cons

I saw very little reward for the extra hours and travel time I put in. The last year I was there, another associate and I had 500 more hours year-to-date than any other associate in our region. Both of got a cost of living raise/adjustment just like all of the other associates. Some appreciation in the form of a bonus or a slightly higher raise would have been nice. Ultimately, I left after working seven days a...

I have been working at DHG full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

-The people I work with are very supportive -There's an open door policy, and I work with and communicate with partners very often -I'm challenged and encouraged to learn and apply what I've learned to each engagement. I don't ever feel like one mistake will make me lose my job. -I sit down on a weekly basis to get review notes over what could be improved- it's not necessary, but my seniors and managers want me to...
