I have been working at DHL Express full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I have been here for 17 years and this is the best time ever to be working at DHL. The opportunities are endless, high levels of management really listen to the suggestions of front line employees, training is abundant, and there is a family atmosphere amongst the workforce.

    Cons

The company is in growth mode and they expect your best day, everyday.

    Advice to Management

Stay the course, it is certainly working!

I worked at DHL Express full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Support and investment in the gold-standard DHL brand by Deutsche Post continues to bode well for the organization's global growth and expansion in most all facets of the supply-chain equation. It's a challenging and fast-paced work environment, yet old-fashioned teamwork and camaraderie between front-line staff and middle management gets amazing things accomplished, again and again. Grace under pressure is a benchmark for DHL employees.

    Cons

Vision and strategies within DHL business units often differs at a street-level versus what executive management touts. Ambiguous and conflicting messages frequently result in erratic synergy and missed opportunities providing clients with 'one-stop shopping' for all their global supply-chain needs. This frequently plays havoc with the consistency of expectations and results, for internal and external clients alike.

    Advice to Management

Focus on, and maximize the core strengths and competencies of the various DHL business units versus each trying to be everything to every client, which is redundant and counter productive.

    Pros

Pay is above average, there are a number of opportunities for global projects and global visibility.

    Cons

The US Express business management has been absolutely terrible for the past 5 years. They have wasted Billions of dollars and in the end are walking away from business in the US.

    Advice to Management

John Mullen and his team have taken a multi-billion dollar enterprise and in 5 years have screwed it up so bad that all DPWN could do is shut it down and walk away! Bloomberg news, this week, reports that DPWN is replacing John Mullen. It's too late for any advice and they wouldn't listen even if it were not too late.

    Pros

Some of my co-workers are the best I've worked with and deserving of respect. DHL also honors the work / life balance overall. It is enjoyable working for a global company and being able to interact with persons from many different cultures.

    Cons

Senior management is grossly incompetent. Upper management seems to be prone to believing and buying into high level assessments (BS) without delving into any sort of detail. The morale is extraordinarily low and can be a drain to live in day after day. There is little direction or knowledge of the company strategy so everyone goes around trying to do the best they can but often inadvertently run up against another.

    Advice to Management

Set a strategy and define your processes so that all work supports that strategy across organizational silos.

    Pros

The people that work at DHL are generally a great group of people.

    Cons

Secrecy by Senior Management regarding strategy planning leaves many people sitting on the edge of their seat wondering if either their job will suddenly be "rationalized". Based on how DHL has operated over the past several years, they have spent quite a lot of money accomplishing almost nothing. Projects get 3/4 completed and then cancelled.

    Advice to Management

Do what needs to be done... Stop pussyfooting around the major issues... Clean up the IT and billing systems, even if it means landing the plane before fixing the engines.
