I have been working at DMH part-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Care and treatment of a very difficult and neglected population.....the chronically mentally ill. They do not receive sufficient psychiatric and medical care.
There is a tremendous lack of resources for this population in the state of Mississippi in particular.
Too many mentally ill are incarcerated

    Cons

Lack of mental health funding, lack of psychiatrists and psychiatrist nurse practitioners Insufficient help for dual diagnosed patients, lack of resources and education about mental illness necessary for the community to absorb the needs of this population once discharged. State hospitals and community mental health centers are not under the same administrative "umbrella " and often do not work together in trying to manage care and treatment for the same population.

    Advice to Management

Include clinicians more in decision making processes that affect us and the population we treat
Increase forensic psychiatry beds for the state.

I have been working at DMH full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You learn to swim very quickly, and there are a lot of good and smart people you can learn from.

    Cons

For every person that is there to work and grow, there are two who are there to gossip. A lot of office politics, but if you can navigate that (by staying out of it), focus of learning and growing and plan your exit strategy, you will be good to go.

    Advice to Management

More accountability for deliverables. A lot of things are said in meetings and in public that never come to fruition. Also, stick to one trial at a time. Seems like we start off trying one thing and then abandon it quickly for something else.
