I worked at Daimler Trucks North America for more than 3 years

    Pros

Good vacation time, good chances for lateral moves

    Cons

Very large gap between management and ground level employees, over-reliance on contractors, bad history of racial and sexual harassment

    Advice to Management

There is a reason your great places to work survey has ~60% dissatisfied.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great perks like the Benz leases, cool office building, opportunities to travel, and a very cool product portfolio. Forward thinking company with a new embrace of diversity. Senior management seems to have a good direction and strategy.

    Cons

Some very horrible middle management has somehow stuck around (quotas?) and can drive good people away. Sometimes a lot of rigidity in the work, very compartmentalized.

    Advice to Management

Cull or demote the toxic management and Keep up the good work!

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for less than a year

    Pros

New HQ bldg is nice to work in and has a subsidized cafeteria. Decent benefits if you are around long enough to use it and expensive if you have a spouse or family. 401(k) vests after 5 years. Standard 2 weeks vacation plus 2 weeks mandatory vacatipn spend for (July 4 week and last week of Dec shutdown for corp office.

    Cons

Petty middle management always thinks that every project is a rushed crisis which results from poor planning and high agency costs. No senior level executive vision or strategy for core business areas. Entrenched departments are siloed by function and cross-team collaboration is difficult. While DTNA has diversity programs for its employees, the majority of who you work with internally and externally are Caucasian... and male. Your immediate manager makes or breaks the experience. Culture is fragmented from within and very cliquish. HR is not your ally.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be a "Best Employer" or "Top Place to Work", stop escorting terminated employees out the freight elevator and treat them with dignity.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Generations of family working at one place, long tenures, smart people with strong work ethics.

    Cons

Stagnation of ideas, lean management used to run short-staffed and overwork employees, over-concerned with great place to work scores but not as concerned with real improvement (flashy fixes for a few, instead of substantive for all)

    Advice to Management

Take a page from QT's treatment of employees, or John Legere's way of listening. Listen to Dan Pink's motivation video and find a way to provide a "free day" where we share what we did at EOD. Bet you find some real problems get fixed when people aren't bogged down with day-to-day work. This is far superior to team-building. We have solutions, let us implement them.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

This company offers good benefits when it comes to insurance, retirement plan and additional perks like the Merc Benz car lease program. The Fort Mill, SC location is good and it is a physically safe place to work.

    Cons

    1. The management. The company structure is very hierarchical and very often you would see managers, Directors not intermingling with junior employees. A typical day is one where the employees are slogging to get their job done while managers are busy staring at their inbox or at their desktop. It's not a company of working managers. Honestly, the Ft. Mill office could save a lot of $ by eliminating most managers... and the company could still do well. A common site in the Aftermarket group in Fort Mill is managers going on a power trip during meetings & team huddles. 2. Racism. This is both direct and indirect. Promotions go to primarily white employees who don't necessarily do their best while over achieving minorities stay where they are. The recent Presidential election had made a bunch of managers quite vocal about their overt and insensitive feelings towards foreign nationals. In certain situations even threats of being fired or having to be kicked out of the country have been directed towards foreign nationals.

    Advice to Management

Understand that managers are the problem when it comes to getting things done. Employees want to be emplowered to do great things, not to be bossed around. Racism should have zero tolerance.

    Pros

Great work environment, focussed on objectives and direction, everyone works as a team for the end goal. Manager and Team Directors encourage growth and creativity

    Cons

International Students have limited scope to convert Internships to Full Time. Internship programs lack HR Feedback and support.

    Advice to Management

Company is attracting new talent and potential. Needs to work on retaining that talent.
