I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America

    Pros

Lots of smart people. Good work life balance.

    Cons

As a global company whose governed by a portion in Germany, some ordinances just dont make sense...and management can be hesitant to make decisions.

    Advice to Management

Practice agile in your management practices. Make a decision and adjust as needed.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

None, as a non-direct employee of the company.

    Cons

DTNA (Daimler Trucks North America) currently has more than fifteen hundred full-time contractors. Sometimes they offer direct hire employment after 3-4 years.

    Advice to Management

Invest in your “non-engineer” employees and their careers.

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

Great perks like the Benz leases, cool office building, opportunities to travel, and a very cool product portfolio. Forward thinking company with a new embrace of diversity. Senior management seems to have a good direction and strategy.

    Cons

Some very horrible middle management has somehow stuck around (quotas?) and can drive good people away. Sometimes a lot of rigidity in the work, very compartmentalized.

    Advice to Management

Cull or demote the toxic management and Keep up the good work!

I worked at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for less than a year

    Pros

New HQ bldg is nice to work in and has a subsidized cafeteria. Decent benefits if you are around long enough to use it and expensive if you have a spouse or family. 401(k) vests after 5 years. Standard 2 weeks vacation plus 2 weeks mandatory vacatipn spend for (July 4 week and last week of Dec shutdown for corp office.

    Cons

Petty middle management always thinks that every project is a rushed crisis which results from poor planning and high agency costs. No senior level executive vision or strategy for core business areas. Entrenched departments are siloed by function and cross-team collaboration is difficult. While DTNA has diversity programs for its employees, the majority of who you work with internally and externally are Caucasian... and male. Your immediate manager makes or breaks the experience. Culture is fragmented from within and very cliquish. HR is not your ally.

    Advice to Management

If you want to be a "Best Employer" or "Top Place to Work", stop escorting terminated employees out the freight elevator and treat them with dignity.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Excellent vacation Challenging work Global footprint and we'll balanced product portfolio Diverse workforce

    Cons

Emotional, ego driven managers Every issue is a 'crisis' Poor compensation and benefits None of that diversity matters. Unless you're from Germany - or based out a German office - your ideas will never be given attention.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than a year

    Pros

    - Great benefits, especially vacation time and 401k. - Opportunity to help impact culture change - Ability to move around and do different things.

    Cons

    - Lot of middle managers are simply in their roles because of their tenure at the company. Company has hesitancy to replace them, though many need to be replaced. - Slow and resistant to change - Working cross-functionally with other departments can be extremely frustrating and challenging. - Too many internal power struggles.

    Advice to Management

    - Don’t be afraid to make changes. Those who are disinterested in helping drive change, shouldn’t remain in roles where they are positioned to do so. - Encourage and help facilitate better relationships across departments and team. Collaborating with others outside your direct working group is a mess and extremely challenging task.

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Generations of family working at one place, long tenures, smart people with strong work ethics.

    Cons

Stagnation of ideas, lean management used to run short-staffed and overwork employees, over-concerned with great place to work scores but not as concerned with real improvement (flashy fixes for a few, instead of substantive for all)

    Advice to Management

Take a page from QT's treatment of employees, or John Legere's way of listening. Listen to Dan Pink's motivation video and find a way to provide a "free day" where we share what we did at EOD. Bet you find some real problems get fixed when people aren't bogged down with day-to-day work. This is far superior to team-building. We have solutions, let us implement them.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Daimler Trucks North America full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Lots of opportunity for overseas transfers with Daimler AG parent company and international experience. Good benefits with 6% 401K match up to 8%. Overall Company growth and performance.

    Cons

Stagnant wages, 3% every year with little opportunity for larger increases (need promotion, not lateral job moves). Poor Project Management, generally.

    Advice to Management

Drive continuous improvement, even in times of good profitability. Pay attention to the balance of employees vs. opportunity and/ or level of effort required. Utilize KPIs to steer processes and activities, not as "rubber stamp" of performance (use meaningful KPIs where improvement is required, not KPIs measuring successes for general management approval that do not tell you anything about how the business is... actually running in areas that can be improved)
