      Pros

Diversity. While walking through the halls in HQ you wouldn't know that you were in Portland, OR. However, the view of the Willamette River and downtown always give it away.

      Cons

Contractors might be treated a little different than full-timers. There is a difference. External is attached to your name in the directory.

Stable job with average pay. Portland employees gets a great location and benefits to work for. Good cafe , good office can’t say the same thing about Detroit

      Cons

Slow to change, more talk less walk in terms or management diversity and decarbonization.

      Pros

I was able to get exposure to the various teams in my department. There was a lot of encouragement to meet new people and ask questions. Office space is very open and modern. Involved on a key project, felt that my work was valued.

      Cons

Pay could be a little higher to account for high cost of living in Portland, OR.

      Pros

      Challenging and engaging work.

      Cons

High contractor turnover and no job security. Most positions are moving out of Portland and in some cases, out of the United States. Losing the ability to work from home.

Driven by talent and determination but lead by fools.

      Pros

There's a lot going on within Daimler so the POTENTIAL to be exposed to several interesting developments does exist. It's a big place and well-rooted in Portland. Your colleagues and co-workers are likely to be great people with much to offer. You'll have to work your standard 60 hours per week plus an extra 20 chasing that carrot to make it happen, unless you're German.

      Cons

Getting what you were promised is like pulling teeth. The management structure is far too tall and the leaders are great at producing profits and good at nothing else. Don't expect them to believe that though. They'll blow smoke about the importance of diversity and cooperation and suggestions and empowerment and forward thinking and demonstrate not a drop. It's PR focused inward which makes one wonder just what kind of lies they must tell customers to produce sales.

      Stay away from DTNA

Mar 3, 2009 - Engineering Manager in Portland, OR

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Pride in seeing the vehicles you designed/built/sold on the road everyday. Locations in Portland and the Carolinas are desirable places to live. People who work for DTNA are passionate about their jobs. There are many opportunities to broaden your knowledge in differing business units such as trucks, engines, axles, school buses, and chassis. Internal candidates are given priority on open positions. There are opportunities to travel to Europe and Asia if you are participating on one of the many teams working to standardize global practices. The German colleagues are great to work with, and you can learn a lot about other cultures.

      Cons

Unless you are German, your opportunities in the Global Daimler organization are severely limited. Compensation lags the market significantly. German headquarters seems totally clueless about the management incompetence occurring 9000 miles away, they should have made changes years ago. When times get tough, jobs overseas (i.e., the U.S.) are expendable but German jobs are sacrosanct. The U.S. operation tries to run as lean as possible yet the Daimler corporate mandate seems to be to create as many jobs as possible, as long as they are in Germany, where the bureaucracy is enormous. Most jobs are heading to Mexico, so the future is very uncertain.

      Engineering in Portland

Jun 15, 2014 - Engineer in Portland, OR
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good work - life balance and benefits. Interesting work and projects. Lots of opportunities for training and to explore different positions within the company in Portland and also abroad. They are continually striving to do better and are, at present, investing a significant amount in their facilities and products.

      Cons

Have to change jobs to get promoted. Highly influenced and sometimes disrupted by management in Germany. Lots of red tape and processes to learn to become effective at your job. Current product issues can be distracting when your main focus is new product development. Managers can be hit or miss and some are very old school and change adverse. Relatively low pay for the Portland metro.
