I have been working at Dale Hardware full-time (More than 8 years)
Student friendly, medical and dental at 32 hours a week. Every other weekend off. Constant learning. Mostly loyal customers who are happy to shop at dale. Very knowledgeable/ experienced staff. Easter, New years day, thanksgiving day and christmas day off. Shorter hours on Christmas eve new years eve and 4th of july. Awesome Christmas parties. Account discounts. Managers read and commend store positive feedback comments during weekly meetings/communication.
Bag/ bucket sales are often and exhausting. Front can be understaffed at times (as well as floor staff) but still work quickly. Pay could be way better for the expected amount of work and effort. Must switch with someone else to get weekend off then turn around and work 2 weekends in a row with one day off per week. Audio and video at customer service counter is annoying and not just used to "ensure customer care" high turnover rate at front. Micro managing can get annoying. Sometimes under appreciated as cashiers/ authorizers.
Advice to Management
Pay your employees higher compensation for your higher expectations. Once the old timers retire or leave employees may not be be willing to build a career with Dale's due to lack of income. Filter new hires a bit more to avoid turn over rate. Think ahead when holidays come up and staff better. Organize sale days so that your staff is aware and prepared WELL in advance of event.
Dale Hardware really tries to provide a lot of perks to support team work. 99% of employees are awesome to work with and management if very reasonable about time off and understanding that you have a life outside of work. Christmas parties are amazing and they are always doing things for the local community.
Health insurance isn't that great and you kind of have to really bargin your starting wage to get paid the way you should.
Advice to Management
Remember that sometimes people just want to hear they did a good job. Hearing more positive feedback than negative is a must to keep moral up
company pays health insurance as long as you work 32 hours per week. Work every other weekend. 25% discount on items that are discountable. Enjoyable and loyal customers (mostly). A company that has been around since 1955 and is an expanding ma and pa store. BBQ employee appreciation day. Holiday company party.
Favoritism towards some individuals. Must switch with another employee in order to have a weekend off. No vacation days can be taken on weekends. Certain (bag) sales ALL employees must work (even if you worked the previous weekend.) No raises for the last 4 years and hours cut during the week (before company expansion was planned) Every so often there is a 'cleaning season.'
