I have been working at Dallas County full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Working with dedicated people who genuinely want to help Dallas county citizens; guaranteed pension plus voluntary retirement available; daytime business hours with weekends, holidays off

    Cons

Typical government bureaucracy; very low pay compared to similar positions in the private sector; more emphasis on attendance than on quality work; requiring salaried employees to clock in/out with zero leeway on "tardiness"

    Advice to Management

Trust the people you hire. Don't micromanage attendance. Salaried employees should not have to use a time clock. Time clock policies should allow some grace time. This is all coming from an employee who has NOT gotten in trouble, but has seen coworkers the victims of witch hunts.

I worked at Dallas County full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunity to deal directly with troubled youth and their families. Decent pay for the most part, great co-workers and dedicated staff.

    Cons

Poor management- many of them have egomaniacal tendencies . Hard to get supplies or support at times. Only three call offs a year, plus a stay-over list that can be overwhelming if you have other obligations

    Advice to Management

Treat staff with more respect and do more to acknowledge individual high performers. Understand that the job is not the only thing in an employees' life. Have a more flexible work-life balance.

I worked at Dallas County full-time

    Pros

The commute to the office was good compared to an hour or more it was 20 minutes, 35 with traffic. The work hours were flexible. Nice mix of employees

    Cons

Downtown parking was a for sure con. In addition the pay was lower than my prior positions

    Advice to Management

The salaries will make it tough to attract and keep talent. Add creative ways to make work life balance more platitible like offering volunteer time off.
