I worked at Dallas County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The benefits are great. The stability of your position, whatever it might be is constant and does not change. Job security. Great people to work with, who share the same goals.

    Cons

There is little chance for advancement even if you are qualified. There is a bit of favortism within departments. You will be noticed for your mistakes but not accomplishments.

    Advice to Management

Managers vary in each department and there should be more structure in work habits when dealing with employees. Some of them micromanage and do more harm than good.

I have been working at Dallas County full-time

    Pros

Working for the Juvenile department gives you access to a great retirement and insurance system. You also have the freedom to leave your office to complete the various obligations of your job at your own discretion.

    Cons

Constant policy changes and an ever increasing burden of responsibility is shifted upon probation Officers whom already have to deal with uncooperative children and families.

    Advice to Management

A reduction in the unnecessary amount of contacts and shift of responsibility to complete these contacts more so towards the probationer will raise morale.

    Cons

There needs to be more opportunities for professional growth and development. More focus on life-work balance is needed.

    Pros

The DSO is a good steady job. Set hours. A very good benefits and retirement package. It's a Civil Service job, so there are very good employee protections in place.

    Cons

There is absolutely NO professional development of any kind whatsoever. Leadership is severely lacking.

I have been working at Dallas County full-time

    Pros

The county has really good insurance benefits, holidays off and PTO. There are always opportunities to move up since there are always vacancies.

    Cons

Poor management, poor pay, overworked, extremely high turnover rate and toxic environment. The employees in certain departments are far from professional. Subordinates are more qualified than management. Will go several YEARS without a pay increase.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees because many of them have better ideas on how to improve the programs. Stop hiring overqualified employees just to turn around and underpay and devalue them. They are more valuable than you think.

    Neutral Outlook

I have been working at Dallas County full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The work is consistent and it is easy to learn what is required. Task are simple and not overly complicated. Fast paced does not apply here. "Do what you can with the time that is given"

    Cons

Advancement is nearly impossible to achieve. I took one week to feel confident enough to work unassisted and if you are looking for new challenges or even suggesting more efficient ways to perform tasks, those suggestions may not be taken seriously.

    Advice to Management

Accountability is lacking and managers are too lenient with employees to the point where managers are being taken advantage of.
