You need to learn who the boss is quick
It's for the children...(easy way for the boss to overcome any of your attempts at self-preservation and use of the word "no)
    Superintendent/Principal turnover/turmoil in 3-5 years

    Advice to Management

    Listen to the grassroots
Do not ignore or hide the truth (it always comes out)
All problems can be overcome, if we are honest
Build up teacher and staff competencies
Stop inventing levels of middle management waste
Provide a path for advancement/salary increases for all levels
Break up the district into smaller pieces. If you don't the State will eventually

I worked at Dallas Independent School District full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Received excellent teacher training. Workmen compensation was very slow in responding to my physical injury. I had to get a lawyer to receive more immediate help from the district risk management department. Worked in a low income hispanic area of Dallas, but I had an outstanding principal. Our school achieved exemplary status for the seven years I taught in Dallas. I have since retired.

    Cons

DallasISD is so huge that sometimes it does not cover all its administrative bases very well. Veteran teachers are at a disadvantage for advancement since the district will have to pay out a larger salary than for a less experienced teacher.

    Advice to Management

Allow for more teacher input into the decision-making process at each school. Give veteran teachers opportunities to move into supervisory roles. Also, reward veteran teachers with increases in salary or bonuses. Subdivide the district into smaller subdistricts with area assistant superintendents to administer those smaller entities.

    Pros

Able to plan lessons with some required curriculum, freedom to plan monthly PTA programs. Supportive parents and students who want to learn- most of the time.

    Cons

Dallas ISD has a long history of allowing administrators to get away and ontinue to look the other way with hassling and bullying teahers

    Advice to Management

Stop administrators from cruel treatment of teachers; give teachers a safe place to speak out about this complaints without fear of losing their jobs. Deal with principals who are guilty of this quickly. Stand up for teachers.

I have been working at Dallas Independent School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

It's a good place to work not everything is perfect within the school district, as well as the others school districts that has the different ethnics groups within the schools.

    Cons

I thinking everybody that work within the schools are trying to educate children.

    Advice to Management

Rather than going out looking for peoples to fill a vacancy, look within the school district a little harder to find the talent you are looking for.

I have been working at Dallas Independent School District full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Public education in a large urban environment is very important and necessary work. There is a lot of job satisfaction in helping kids get out of a bad life and into a better one-- those who want to, of course.

    Cons

The Board of Trustees is a dysfunctional mess. At the higher levels, politics is rampant and turnover is very high. Which means every few years, everything you've been building is likely to be dismantled and replaced with something new... which will also be replaced right about the time when it was beginning to bear fruit.

    Advice to Management

    None
