I have been working at Darden full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The money is super easy. I love the corporate entity Darden has. I love the availability of tools as opposed to smaller concepts.

    Cons

Everyone has to jump hoops to meet the numbers corporate is pushing managers to hit. So many employees means employees are a bit more expendable.

    Advice to Management

Managers should listen to employees and their needs. Over staffing doesn't help anyone's pocket. The most important part is the quality of the staff not the quantity.

I worked at Darden full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

You will learn a lot about the restaurant and hospitality industry.

    Cons

It takes a long time to get promoted. Leadership tends to be "old school" in that everyone pays attention to when you arrive and what time you leave. They put a premium on people being there longer than others regardless of how much of that time is actually spent working. If you can finish your work in 8 hours, but another person accomplishes the same amount (or often less) but that person gets in earlier and stays later, the latter person will be viewed more favorably.

Darden tends to pay more than other employers in Orlando. Which is a pro and a con. The con of that is if you take a job in their finance department, you will likely be stuck there even when you realize that you won't likely get promoted in a reasonable amount of time. This is because leaving will likely require you to take a pay cut unless you're willing to leave Florida for a lateral.

I worked at Darden full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Get to work with in a cultural diverse work place and interact with a lot of guests. Developed some great relationships with other managers in the region most left after 1-2 years with Darden.

    Cons

It's all about who you know not what you know. Managing Partners are gods, even really bad ones. No development from Managing Partner and no support from area director he came around once every two weeks and spent most of his time on the phone didn't really care about his team.

    Advice to Management

If a managing partner isn't being managed by his director and they have had a long standing relationship then maybe the director no longer holds his managing partner to standards and accountability. Its pretty pathetic the store was year over year down in sales and the no changes at the top.
